Diversity Essentials, a joint initiative between the Ohio University Office for Diversity and Inclusion and University Human Resources Leadership and Staff Development, will host a fall 2013 cohort.
The initiative consists of four interactive cohort sessions. The sessions include large and small group discussions, as well as hands on exercises to foster a conversation about diversity to raise awareness and increase inclusion. The first session will take place on Friday, Sept. 13.
"The goal of Diversity Essentials is to engage both campus and community members in a dialogue about issues related to diversity and inclusion," said Stephanie Sanders, assistant director in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. "Through interactive sessions, participants are able to develop and draw awareness to the unique differences within the OHIO community as well as the Athens community."
The sessions are each three hours long and will be based on such themes as – celebrating cultural identity, understanding the global village, rebuilding diverse perspectives and unmasking privilege. For the first time, an added curriculum feature will include invited guest speakers who will discuss their personal experiences of how diversity impacts the workplace.
The cohorts are uniquely formatted to gradually increase in interaction and content with each session, as well as promote community development. Therefore, to achieve the greatest success, participants are encouraged to attend at least three out of the four cohorts.
Diversity Essentials is open to the Ohio University community as well as the general public.
