College of Fine Arts moves up in graduate school rankings

According to the U.S. News and World Report 2013 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools Ohio University's College of Fine Arts and two of its graduate programs have moved up in their rankings.

Graduate schools offer artists the opportunity to earn an M.F.A. (Masters of Fine Arts) in an art specialty field, such as graphic design, painting, ceramics or visual communication. The College of Fine Arts was ranked 53rd nationally among graduate schools, up five spots from a previous ranking of 58th.

The School of Art Ceramics program was ranked fifth nationally, up from being ranked eighth previously. The ceramics graduate program at Ohio University is highly selective, often receiving nearly 80 applications every year from around the world for three first-year spots.

The graduate Printmaking program was ranked 14th nationally, up from a previous ranking of 20th. With over 6,500 square feet of print shops, Ohio University also has one of the largest libraries of lithographic limestone in the world.

The U.S. News and World Report master of fine arts program rankings are based solely on the results of a peer assessment survey. These rankings, completed in 2012, are based on a fall 2011 survey of art school deans and other top art school academics, two per school, at 230 M.F.A. programs in art and design. Respondents were asked to rate the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding).
