Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.
1. How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?
I was very surprised. There was a campus meeting that day and our interim dean opened the meeting saying we have a major issue on campus" and then proceeded to introduce two employees from Athens to speak on this issue. The two employees were from Classified Senate and they said they did have an issue to speak about (I was so concerned I had no clue what this issue was), then they introduced me and awarded me Employee of the Month for December 2011. I was shocked and embarrassed, my face turned beet red.
2. What is your job title and how long have you worked at the University?
My title is senior library associate and I have held this position since September 2009. Before this I worked a temporary position at the University for about a year, and preceding that I had worked as a student in the OU-C library since 2005.
3. What are the most enjoyable things about your job?
I definitely enjoy all the different hats I get to wear at work and I of course love to help. Whether it is our students, faculty, community, or staff; appreciative people make my day.
4. What is your hometown and where do you live now?
I grew up in South Salem, a very small village in the southwest corner of Ross County. I currently reside in Circleville and I am planning on moving to German Village soon.
5. What are your long-term goals?
I want to obtain my master's degree in library and information science, have a few children, and work toward having a self-sustaining green homestead off the grid.
6. What was the last good book you read?
"The Introvert's Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extroverts World" is a book I would recommend to any introvert, it has truly helped me professionally and personally.
7. If you weren't in your present job, you would be working as a ______. Why?
I would be selling soap in some coastal town. I love making soap and I do not enjoy Ohio weather at all. I would gladly take a hurricane season over the amount of gray days we have, but for now I will keep this my plan for retirement.
8. What things in life are the most important to you?
Family, although taxing at times I love my mother, brothers, nephews, niece and of course my partner more than anything.
9. Where is your favorite vacation destination?
I don't have a favorite destination, I love to see new places and do new things, but I do love to camp. Getting away from the hustle and bustle; slowing down is probably my favorite thing to do.
10. What are your hobbies?
I am a bit of a hobby man. I love to garden, cook, hike, paint, tackle home improvements, and make soap. I really enjoy anything and everything that helps me relax.
11. What is something that most people don’t know about you?
My bachelor's degree is in criminal justice.
12. What are your favorite TV shows?
I am such a fan of The New Girl, Raising Hope, and Once Upon a Time. Every Tuesday I get so excited thinking about the new episodes that I can't wait to get home.
13. What is your favorite type of music?
I like adult alternative, Indy pop, and singer/songwriter types of music.
14. What is the next big event you can't wait for?
I have a camping trip in the makes for Memorial Day weekend. I am going to West Virginia with a close group of friends. Along with just being with friends I love the serenity of camping on a mountain and hiking every day.
15. Who are your favorite celebrities?
Zooey Deschanel. She is a very talented actress and singer and she also embodies the cute and quirky type of person I see myself as.
16. Who are the most annoying celebrities to you?
The famous for being famous type -- Kardashians, Hiltons, and any of the housewives to give a few examples. Celebrities like this annoy me because they really have no purpose, I truly believe that reality TV is ruining the small screen and possibly all adolescent minds.
17. What is your dream car/truck/SUV?
I am thinking really hard about buying a Smart Car Cabriolet. I am not a big "car guy" so practicality is very important to me.
18. What is your favorite saying or quote?
I have three favorite quotes:
"It is what it is, nothing less nothing more."
"If you always do what you always did you will always get what you always got."
"If a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live." - Martin Luther King Jr.
