The Ohio University Libraries' Diversity Committee will host the Winter Culture Showcase Series at 2 p.m. Monday Feb. 20, in the Friends of The Libraries Room (319) on the third floor of Alden Library.
This quarter's theme is "Athens Alternatives: Locovores, Work Exchange and Organic Farming." The theme explores the ways in which people in Athens are trying to be economically sustainable … outside of the larger construct, explained Diversity Committee Leader Eileen Theodore-Shusta.
The unique event will include presentations by three local organizations, Athens Farmers Market* (AFM), Athens Time Exchange(ATX) and ACEnet, which are all making strides in sustaining the economy and economic future of the community. The presentations will each be followed by brief question and answer sessions.
"AFM provides alternatives for the Athens residents by providing organic grown products and being able to speak directly with the producer," said current AFM Director Jack Cantrell.
Cantrell will speak on the farmers market's 40 years of contributions to the community, and the benefits of consuming locally grown and produced products at the event.
Other speakers include Angie Maiden of ACEnet and Beth Clodfelter with the Athens Time Exchange.
Located in Athens, ACEnet* is a regional entrepreneurship and economic development organization. Through business incubation, coaching, brand campaigns, loans and networking, they help new businesses get on their feet.
"Our organization builds the capacity of communities to network, work together and innovate to create a dynamic, sustainable regional economy with opportunities for all," said Maiden.
Beth Clodfelter, the director of Fulbright Programs at Ohio University, will speak on the Athens Time Exchange* in which members trade services at no monetary cost – for instance guitar lessons for yard-work, or painting for tax help, etc. The goal of the ATX is to "strengthen community bonds as we value each other's time and recognize all time as equal."
The event will feature baked goods from Crumbs Bakery and beverages. Everyone is encouraged to attend and explore the Athens Alternatives.
