Members of the Ohio University community who would like to pay their respects to late Ohio University student Gloria M. Dawes' family and friends will have that opportunity from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in Galbreath Chapel on the Ohio University Athens Campus.
Dawes, a senior special education major in the Patton College of Education and Human Services, died in an auto accident on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Ohio University alumnus Matt Moore organized the gathering with permission from Dawes' parents. He said the event does not have an agenda and there are no scheduled speakers. Moore graduated in June 2011 with a bachelor's degree in finance and marketing.
"I just want people who knew Gloria to have an opportunity to have closure," Moore said. "Her parents and sister will be there, so people who haven't met them can do so. They also can spend some
time praying and talking to other people who knew her and miss her."
Moore is a family friend of the Dawes and has known Gloria since he was in elementary school. He said Dawes' mother also served as a teacher at his high school in Belmont, Ohio.
"I will always remember Gloria as someone who was always smiling," Moore said. "She had an adventurous heart."
Memorial contributions can be made to the Gloria Dawes Dance Scholarship Fund c/o Oglebay Institute Dance Department, 1330 National Road, Wheeling, W.Va. 26003.
