Greg Emery has been the Director of the Global Leadership Center since 2000. Dr. Emery holds an MBA (finance concentration) and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion (German hermeneutics and existentialism). He also holds Fulbright Senior Specialist status in Business Administration and Leadership. He has lectured, done research, and managed student consulting projects in Japan, China, Mexico, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the Czech Republic. In addition to serving as an education advisor at the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia, he has supervised projects for various European embassies in Washington, D.C. and for the US Embassies and Commercial Service Offices in Bangkok, Thailand and Warsaw, Poland. Dr. Emery is currently engaged in a variety of international outreach, development, and leadership projects, including projects done in conjunction with Nha Trang University (Vietnam), the University of Cambodia (Cambodia), the University of Liberia (Liberia, West Africa), and the State of Ohio's Department of Development. He has also made presentations at such international academic and economic conferences as the Asia Economic Forum and the International Leadership Association. Finally, and as the GLC is an affiliate of Harvard University's Pluralism Project, he runs an annual GLC project devoted to documenting leadership issues in a nearby Hindu community.
Dr. Larry Burmeister joins the Global Leadership Center as a Faculty Fellow. He comes to Ohio University from the University of Kentucky, where he was a faculty member in the Departments of Sociology and Community and Leadership Development for 23 years. His international experience includes two Fulbright teaching/research awards in South Korea, faculty advisor for the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture's French Agricultural Study Tour, and recently a visiting professorship in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Tokyo during the 2006-07 academic year. He was selected as the American Sociological Association's Congressional Fellow in 2001, working on the staff of Senator Kent Conrad. Current research interests include agricultural restructuring and rural development initiatives in East Asia in response to ongoing globalization trends, economic strategies to reinvigorate mid-size farms in the US, and the emergence of local agrifood system movements in the US and their efforts to influence national agricultural/rural development policies. He holds a joint appointment as Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
Dr. Salam Bash Al-Maliky came from Iraq to join the GLC in October 2009. He holds a BSc in Nuclear Engineering and MSc and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering. While in Iraq, he worked at the Iraqi Atomic Energy Agency as an engineer for two years. In 1994, he joined the College of Engineering at Al-Mustansiriya University (Baghdad/Iraq) as a faculty member. He was also the Director of the Agricultural Environment Department of the Environmental Research Center at Al-Mustansiriya University from 1998-2003. Dr. Al-Maliky is a specialist in the areas of air pollution, noise pollution and sanitary engineering. In Iraq and in addition to teaching, supervising MSc theses, and conducting research (published in numerous academic journals) in Iraq, he has also made presentations and led workshops at several local and international scientific conferences. Dr. Al-Maliky is a member of several organizations including the council of Environmental Researches Center at Al-Mustansiriyah University, Iraqi Engineers Society, Iraqi Translators Society, and Iraqi Environment Protection Society.
Dr. Pang Pichayalak Pichayakul has been with the GLC since Fall 2005. She is now working on her second PhD.-Individual Interdisciplinary Program which consists of three areas: Communications, Telecommunication, and Southeast Asian Studies. She has earned a Bachelor Degree of Economics from Chiang Mai University,Thailand, an MBA from Eastern Michigan University, USA and a Doctor of Philosophy in Management from Adamson University, Philippines. Besides her academic work, she has spent her time in exploring the beauty of cultural differences; she has traveled around Asia, North America, Europe, and, Australia. Her interests are business, tourism, and culture.
Nick Yinger graduated from the Global Leadership Center as part of the class of 2008. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics. In the fall of 2008 Nick received Bachelor's degrees in English and Spanish from Ohio University. Nick studied in Pamplona, Spain for two quarters during his undergraduate coursework. He plans to teach English abroad for a period of time following his graduation. This is Nick's second year as a teaching assistant for the Global Leadership Center. Nick enjoys reading, writing, traveling, fine art and languages. Nick will be leading the GLC 100 class in the winter.
Ngan Nguyen joined the GLC in 2009. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Cultural Studies in Education at the College of Education, Ohio University. She holds Master degrees in Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Education, both from Ohio University. She is a Fulbright alumni and she is also a recipient of A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Scholarship and P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship. Ngan had been teaching at Nha Trang University in Vietnam for three years before she came to Ohio University to pursue her graduate studies. Her current research interests include language education and marginalization. She believes education can make a difference in people's lives and experiences, and bring about social change.
