Do I have to use multi-factor authentication every time I connect?

Yes, multi-factor authentication is required any time your device connects or re-connects to the VPN. This includes if your device goes to sleep. Basically, if your network connection is interrupted for any reason, you will have to re-authenticate.

Why can't I access my Home drive?

If you previously mapped a network connection to the address \\home.ohio.edu\home, you may have trouble accessing your Home drive/folder when connected to the VPN.

To fix this issue, update your saved connection or mapped drive to use the address \\shared.ohio.edu\home instead.

Does Campus VPN have access to KMS?

Yes. If you encounter issues and would like to manually activate:

  1. Open Elevated Command Prompt
  2. To define KMS connection, type:
    cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -skms kms.ohio.edu
  3. To activate, type:
    cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -ato
  4. To view KMS status, type:
    cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -dlv
ERROR: “You must provide a phone number or select a local connection” or “No modem is installed on your machine”

This occurs if “All Users” instead of “My Use Only” was selected during the Campus VPN profile setup. To correct: Remove all Campus VPN instances, reboot the machine, and reinstall your Campus VPN profile, this time choosing "My Use Only.

ERROR 812: The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPN server...

This error can have several causes: 

  • An incorrect password.
  • Your account has not been authorized to use Campus VPN .
  • Your account is locked out of multi-factor authentication from too many failed authentication attempts.

Is there an easier way to connect to the VPN from a Windows device?

Create a desktop shortcut to the VPN

  1. Right-click your desktop.
  2. Choose New.
  3. Choose Shortcut.
  4. Type the following for the location of the item:
    C:\Windows\System32\rasphone.exe
  5. Choose Next.
  6. Give your shortcut a name, like Campus VPN.

Using your shortcut

  1. Launch your Campus VPN shortcut by double-clicking it.
  2. When prompted, choose Connect.

  3. To further streamline your connection process, when entering your OHIO ID and password, make sure Save password and Connect automatically are checked.
