OHIO: Your leadership lab
As a quintessential college town, Athens doesn’t just deliver hip local coffee shops and midnight falafel (yeah, we’ve got that). What you find in a college-town environment like OHIO’s is that students become part of the fabric of the University and the region, earning opportunities to lead in ways that simply aren’t available at a big city school.
Produce, write and run local media
WOUB public TV and radio and Ohio University’s student newspaper The Post are leading media outlets not only for the University community but for the city and the region, and both are staffed primarily by students.
Serve in local government
At most universities, you can serve as a student government leader or senator. At OHIO, students have run – and won – seats on our local city council, launching their political careers while still working on their degrees. There are also opportunities to assist with research or community service projects with local governments across the region.
Tackle community challenges
Undergraduate students from any major can apply to become an undergraduate research scholar with the Voinovich School for Leadership and Public Service, where they will be assigned to research projects solving challenges for communities across Southeast Ohio.
Launch a new venture
In addition to working with startups across the region, OHIO’s Innovation Center has also worked with students looking to take a new product from idea to production.
Take to the Stage
A town the size of Athens doesn’t usually have a professional theater or dance company, but thanks to OHIO’s incredible Chaddock+Morrow College of Fine Arts, Athens has Tantrum Theater, a professional company run by OHIO that brings professional performers to town several times a year for productions that incorporate student actors and technicians. That means our students graduate with professional stage experience.
