    OCTOBER MEMBER CHALLENGE

    Grover Center E124

Travel from Athens, Ohio to Athens, Greece without even leaving Grover Center!

This year's Fall Member Challenge begins on October 1. Pick up a "Passport" from the WellWorks front desk and track your daily exercise. Each minute of exercise equals 6 miles of travel. Travel 5,322 miles (887 minutes of exercise) by October 31 and you'll -metaphorically- make it all the way to Athens, Greece.

All completed "Passports" will be entered into a drawing where 5 randomly selected participants will have $20 placed on their WellWorks account (to be applied to any WellWorks service).

    Official Rules:
To sign up: Grab a passport from the front desk, write your name in the blank provided and begin tracking your workouts. Passports can be left at the front desk.
Every minute you exercise in the fitness center/at a group exercise class at WellWorks is equal to 6 miles on your trip from Athens, Ohio to Athens, Greece.  Example: If you work out for 35 minutes, 210 miles will be added to your distance.
It is the responsibility of the member to document workout times (in minutes) on their passport. Once documented, the passport should be given to the staff at the front desk to be initialed and dated for each day. Times must be recorded on the day the exercise occurred.
Multiple workouts in one day are accepted as long as they are completed in the WellWorks Fitness Center or at a WellWorks group exercise class.  Example: lifting weights in the morning and Zumba at night can both be recorded. Exercise  completed outside of  the WellWorks facility does not count towards your distance. The only exception will be for the participants of Ridge Fitness Camp. Participants of the Ridges Fitness Camp will be recorded by WellWorks staff following the class.
You have from Oct 1 until Oct 31 to earn your 5,322 miles. Total time needed is 887 minutes. (14.7 hours)
Must be a WellWorks member to participate. Only one entry per WellWorks member. Five winners will be selected at random from the submitted passports. Each winner will receive a $20 coupon to apply to any purchase at WellWorks.  Tracking of attendance and requesting signature from the on-duty front desk staff is the responsibility of the member.

    BIKE TO WORK DAY

Help Us Celebrate National Bike to Work Day. The League of American Bicyclists, the national organization of bicyclists, designates Friday, May 18 as National Bike to Work Day. An event to celebrate is planned for Athens this year, organized by the Athens City-County Health Department, Ohio University, and HAPCAP transit.

All people are welcomed to participate and give bicycling to work that day a try. Four pit stops will be located throughout the City of Athens and employees are encouraged to stop by one of them Friday, May 18, from 7:30-10:00am for free coffee, water, snack, and to sign up for free raffle prizes. Representatives from local bike shops will be at each pit stop to answer any bike-related questions.

    Pop-Up Pit Stop locations are:

    • Mill Street (near mile marker 1)
    • Habitat House on W. Union Street
    • Uptown Athens near the Courthouse
    • Baker University Center (1st floor)-

Local sponsors include: Athens Bicycle, Black Diamond Bicycle, Catayst Café, Ridge Runner Coffee, Donkey Coffee, Athens Yoga, and Ohio University WellWorks. Please join us in thanking them by supporting these local businesses.

Following are some tips that will help you enjoy biking to work more.

    • Have your bike checked over by your local bike shop

    • Always wear a helmet to protect your head in the event of a crash

    • Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are travelling

    • Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings

    • Look before you change lanes or signal a turn; indicate your intention, then act

    • Be visible and predictable at all times; wear bright clothing and signal turns

Please contact Megan Buskirk at the Athens City-County Health Department with any questions. mbuskirk@health.athens.oh.us, 740-581-0476 x246.

    NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH

    WellWorks

This March, the Nutrition Team at WellWorks has celebrated National Nutrition Month by providing a variety of inspiring events that encourage members, students and the campus community to "put their best fork forward". From offering a mobile "Healthy Happy Hour" for CHSP faculty and staff to serving up healthy, custom-created trail mix to students, good food has been a staple on the menu this month. Our applied dietetics students brought MyPlate resources to the WellWorks open house celebration mid-month, as well as an eye-catching demo showing the sugar content of sweetened beverages. Meanwhile, our dietitian and recent graduates teamed up with the LGBT Center and Ping to provide interactive presentations on mindful eating and fueling fitness.

What are  you  doing this month to put the "delicious in nutritious" and put your best fork forward?

    COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA)

    Shade River Organic Farms

Joining a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a great way to get fresh, local, organic vegetables delivered to you. Every week/other week you'll receive a box filled with vegetables and herbs directly from a local farm.

Since 1985, Shade River Organic Farm has grown an abundant selection of high quality, certified organic produce. The Hamiltons have been delivering amazing vegetables and herbs to CSA supporters at Ohio Univeristy since 2011.

This year you can benefit from the Hamilton’s bountiful harvest by joining their CSA—Community Supported Agriculture—program. Members purchase a share of their crops before the growing season starts and, in turn, receive a selection of fresh organic produce for eighteen weeks—with pickup options at either Ohio University or the Athens Farmers Market—beginning in mid-June. Plus, this year the Hamiltons had added chickens to their farm which means a fresh egg delivery option for you.
