Campus Reuse and Repair Fair merges with OHIO Earth Day to celebrate the environment

After the success of last year's stop on outfitter Patagonia’s 'Worn Wear' college tour, Ohio University will host a second Reuse and Repair Fair on Thursday, April 19, 2018, as part of a celebration of Earth Month.

This year, the Voinovich School's OHIO Zero Waste Initiative is partnering with Office of Sustainability to celebrate Earth Day festivities in conjunction with the Reuse and Repair Fair. A day of sustainability-themed events is planned, including activities inside and outside the Walter Hall Rotunda, to showcase an impressive range of on- and off-campus environment-related groups.

Last year’s popular ReBike Program event returns again, as well, offering students, faculty and staff an opportunity to purchase as-is salvaged bikes for a flat fee of $40. Registration begins at 1 p.m. on the Walter Hall Lawn for ReBike’s first-come, first-served process.

Arbor Day will also be celebrated, and the University’s status as a Tree Campus USA designee will be highlighted.

Following the afternoon's activities, the annual OHIO Earth Day Celebration will take place in the Walter Hall Rotunda with a keynote address by Athens Mayor Steve Patterson scheduled for 5:30 p.m.  A Sustainability Awards presentation will follow Mayor Patterson’s address. More information on the Sustainability Awards, including nomination forms, is available at https://www.ohio.edu/sustainability/get-involved/earth-day.cfm. Nominations must be received by April 16.

The schedule of events is as follows:

1:00-4:30 p.m.  Earth Day/Arbor Day activities (Walter Hall Lawn)

1:00-4:30 p.m.  Reuse and Repair Fair Activities (Walter Hall Rotunda)

2:00-4:00 p.m.  ReBike Program sale of salvaged bicycles (Walter Hall Lawn)

4:30-5:30 p.m.  Appetizers and networking (Walter Hall Rotunda)

5:30-6:00 p.m.  Earth Day Celebration Keynote Address, Athens Mayor Steve Patterson (Walter Hall Rotunda)

6:00-6:30 p.m.  Presentation of Sustainability Awards (Walter Hall Rotunda)

The kick-off for Earth Day Festivities will occur the previous evening.  On Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. Ohio University will feature a free Sustainability Film Series film at the Athena Cinema. The film, “Death by Design,” explores the growing problem of electronic waste and "tells a story of environmental degradation, of health tragedies, and the fast approaching tipping point between consumerism and sustainability," according to the film's website. The film is being co-hosted by OHIO Zero Waste, Office of Sustainability, Voinovich School’s Environmental Studies program and Campus Recycling.
