November 10, 2011

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) commissioned this research to examine the individual attitudes and beliefs, social norms, cultural practices and other socio-ecological barriers that hinder Appalachian women who receive WIC benefits from breastfeeding. Group interviews were conducted in the 19 Appalachian counties in Ohio with the lowest breastfeeding rates. The interviews focused on identifying barriers and facilitators to breastfeeding initiation and success.
