To aid in promoting OHIO faculty/researchers to the external media, UCM's External Communications Team wanted to develop a searchable, user-friendly online database of University experts across various fields that members of the media could use to find and contact for their stories. UCM’s Creative Team helped translate our ideas into a workable interactive website at www.ohio.edu/ucm/media/experts.
Tasked with promoting Ohio University experts externally with a focus on the national audience, the External Communications Team actively pitches experts to media on a continual basis. We wanted a directory that members of the media could visit at any time and search on their own to find experts for their stories.
UCM worked with website developers in the Office of Information Technology to translate our needs into an attractive, user-friendly website. UCM designed an access page that features three interchangeable experts with photos and videos, incorporates department contact information, and includes a live feed of the media-focused Twitter account. The site includes search functions that allow users to quickly find an expert using keywords or topics, specific areas of expertise, or by an expert's name. In addition, the profiles include a video of the expert outlining his or her expertise in order to provide an example of how the expert looks and sounds on camera. A high level of attention to detail was given to the development of the site, which is evident in the final product and the many functions provided to our customers. In essence, the site offers a one-stop shop to find Ohio University’s expert sources for news stories. As a result of this project, the University as a whole continues to gain increased exposure while each college at OHIO also benefits through the representation and promotion of its faculty and staff as experts in their respective fields.
