UCM offers a limited number of graduate assistantships in select areas, based on available funding. These positions give selected students an opportunity to hone their skills and apply their knowledge in communications and marketing-related fields. These positions may offer a stipend and are only open to students in OHIO graduate programs.
Students must consult with their advisors prior to applying to determine whether a UCM graduate assistantship experience will make them eligible for academic credit. Graduate assistantship positions may vary in duration from one academic semester to a full academic year. Typically, a minimum of 10 hours per week is required.
Assistant Editor (GA), University News

Responsibilities: Ohio University Communications and Marketing (UCM) seeks a graduate assistant for the role of assistant editor, University News, for the 2012-2013 academic year. This is a great opportunity for the graduate student who wishes to develop and hone his or her editing, writing, organizing, and team leadership and editorial management skills in an online journalism/organizational communications setting.
As the assistant editor, University News, the graduate student will support and report to the UCM Internal Communications Team staff member responsible for the editorial management of the University’s official news website Compass. Major duties include:
· Assisting in the development, planning, and management of Compass editorial calendar
· Leading the Student New Bureau
· Assigning, coordinating, and editing student (PACE/Practicum) news stories
· Researching and writing selected stories
· Conducting research and analyzing and applying readership results
Qualifications: The successful graduate student will be one who desires to take his or her skills to the next level in a demanding and professional academic communications environment. He or she will have very strong writing, editing organizational, and leadership skills. He or she will be excellent at time management and have served in an editorial position for an online or print publication and will have edited and coached developing writers. He or she will be a strong and communicator, both verbally and in writing. A thorough knowledge of AP style is a strong plus. The position runs throughout the academic year.
