President Nellis selects Ohio University’s first Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion

ATHENS, Ohio (May 15, 2018) –  Today, Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis named Dr. Gigi Secuban as Ohio University’s first Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Secuban, who has more than 20 years of experience and comes to Ohio University most recently from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will officially lead OHIO’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion team beginning June 18, 2018.

“Dr. Secuban has a passion for working with students at the foundation of her work,” President Nellis said. “She enjoys supporting the academic and personal development of students as well as promoting diversity and inclusion efforts on campus and the community. She clearly shares the values of our institution and I am looking forward to having her join our Bobcat Family.”

At the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Secuban served as the Associate Vice Chancellor and Director of the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations. In that role, she provided administrative oversight for the Asian American Cultural Center; Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center; La Casa Cultural Latina; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Resource Center; Native American House; Diversity and Social Justice Education programs; the Women’s Resources Center and International Education Programs.

Before arriving at Illinois, she previously served in positions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in Enrollment Services, College of Education and Health Professions, Student Affairs as well as the College of Engineering. Dr. Secuban brings a wide range of experiences in multicultural programs and international education, first-year experience, recruitment, and retention.  Her background includes a history of collaboration with academic affairs in developing recruitment and retention programs in the Colleges of Engineering and Education at Arkansas.

“I am excited and honored to join President Nellis and the rest of the OHIO family in this new role for the university,” Dr. Secuban said. “I look forward to working with the Diversity and Inclusion team to build on the great foundations they’ve put in place to help all students, staff and faculty excel. Together, we are going to further elevate Ohio’s national reputation as a leader and innovator around issues of diversity and inclusivity in American higher education.”

Dr. Secuban holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, master’s degree in Health Science, and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration, all from the University of Arkansas.
