Double Majors and Dual Degrees

What is the difference between a double major and a dual degree?

 

Double Major

Simultaneous pursuit of multiple majors that lead toward the same degree within the same college is a double major. This leads to a single diploma, though both majors are noted on the student’s transcript. To meet the requirements for a double major a student must:

  • meet all of the requirements for both majors
  • complete a total of at least 120 semester hours of college work
  • earn a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework at Ohio University
  • declare both majors
  • meet the residency requirement (minimum number of semester hours earned at Ohio University toward the major) for each major

Examples of Double Majors:

  • Two Bachelor of Business Administration majors (B.B.A.): one in Accounting and one in Marketing, both from the College of Business
  • Two Bachelor of Science majors (B.S.): one in Chemistry and one in Biological Sciences, both from the College of Arts and Sciences

 

Dual Degree

Simultaneous pursuit of two majors in different colleges or more than one degree type in the same college leads to the award of two degrees, with two diplomas. To meet the requirements for a dual degree a student must:

  • meet all of the major and college requirements for both degrees
  • complete a total of at least 135 semester hours of college work
  • earn a minimum of 45 semester hours of coursework at Ohio University
  • declare the majors
  • meet the residency requirement (minimum number of semester hours earned at Ohio University toward the major) for each major

Examples of Dual Degrees:

  • Two degrees from different colleges
    A Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in Finance from the College of Business and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Economics from the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Two degrees from the same college
    A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English from the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Two majors with the same degree, from different colleges
    A Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English from the College of Arts and Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art from the College of Fine Arts.
