Transportation & Parking COVID-19 Response

OHIO is focused on the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff as we implement a phased return to face-to-face courses on our campuses this fall. This is a time of extraordinary and rapid change that requires every Bobcat to take necessary precautions to keep themselves and one another safe. By staying informed, adhering to distancing and other safety measures, and acclimating to the new and dynamic environment, we can learn, teach and work in unanimity with one another, understanding that our united efforts will be vital in protecting all the members of our Bobcat family. Transportation & Parking at OHIO is multimodal to include personal vehicles, bicycles, public options like buses, scooters and ride sharing. All of our operating procedures and protocols have been developed in accordance with CDC and ODH guidance as well as the Be Safe Bobcats initiatives. 

CATS: Daily Campus Shuttles

CATCAB: Paratransit

CAT CAB is enhancing the safety of passengers through operational changes in response to COVID-19, including:

  • High touch areas will be cleaned and disinfected after each ride.
  • Barriers have been installed to separate transit operators and passengers. 
  • Time slots will be increased from 10 to 15 -minute increments to allow thorough cleaning.
  • Vehicle occupancy will be limited to one passenger to promote physical distancing.
  • CAT CAB drivers will wear face masks.
  • Riders will be required to wear face masks.
  • Hand sanitizer will be provided inside the vehicle.
  • In addition, TPS recommends that all riders:
    • Practice proper hygiene- wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after riding in the vehicle or use 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Bobcat Pass: APT Partnership

The Bobcat Pass Program is a partnership between Ohio University & HAPCAP which enables faculty/staff and students to ride Athens Public Transit (APT) routes free of charge utilizing their university ID.

To help protect others APT is requiring customers to wear masks, promoting physical distancing, and providing increased cleaning activities. For more information on APT and the most current schedules please visit their website

Charter Travel & Special Trips

Ohio University's charter bus services are enhancing the safety of passengers through operational changes in response to COVID-19, including:

  • High touch areas will be cleaned and disinfected before and after travel, including handrails and seats.
  • Barriers have been installed to separate transit operators and passengers. 
  • Hand sanitizer will be provided inside the buses at the front doors.
  • Drivers will be wearing face masks.
  • Riders will be required to wear face masks.
  • Certain seats will be taped off to promote physical distancing and limited occupancy. 
  • All riders will be responsible for loading/unloading their own luggage.
  • In addition, TPS recommends all riders:
    • Adhere to physical distancing while on board and by spacing out when seated on the bus
    • Practice proper hygiene- wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after riding the bus or use 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 

Out of state reservation requests must follow the University Travel Restriction Guidelines. Anyone traveling out of the state of Ohio will need prior written approval by the respective unit Vice President or Provost Office. 

Airport Shuttles

Suspended Phase 2. Go Bus operations will continue to be available for service to the Columbus Airport. 

Fleet Rental

TPS fleet rental vehicle seating capacities have been modified to support 6-foot physical distancing between passengers. Please reference the seating guide provided in each rental vehicle and comply with authorized seating patterns to ensure appropriate distancing is maintained.

Standard vehicle rental rates apply, please review the modified fleet rental seating capacities and ensure rental reservation requests reflect appropriate vehicle quantities to support travel party needs.

Be safe Bobcats, please wear a face mask or face covering when operating university vehicles.

Fleet rental vehicles are cleaned and disinfected for operator/passenger safety and comfort prior to each reservation.

ZipCar

The ZipCar service will resume as of October 7, 2020 with one vehicle returning to campus. This vehicle will be located outside of Sowle Hall on South Green. For more information on reserving your next ZipCar reservation please visit their website.

Spin: E-Scooters

Effective Monday, August 24th, 2020 Spin E-Scooters re-launched a reduced number of units on the Athens Campus. Please review updated Campus Operating Guidelines for new information regarding parking scooters after use. 

All shared scooter users need to follow the rules of the road. OHIO recommends that riders enhance health and safety by:

  • Disinfecting handlebars before and after use.
  • Continuing to wear a helmet.
  • Not touching your face, mouth or eyes while operating the shared device. 
  • Practicing proper hygiene- wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after riding or use 70% alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Ohio University partners with Spin to provide shared mobility programs on campus. E-Scooters are owned and operated by Spin. For more information on what Spin is doing to promote health and safety please visit their website. 

Campus Parking

A parking permit or paid meter is required when parking on campus during Fall Semester.

Faculty/Staff

TPS has currently delayed the annual faculty/staff permit renewal and suspended all payroll deductions through Fall Semester while guidance for campus operations is developed. Current campus permits will be honored beyond their expiration date of June 30th, 2020 to support faculty/staff who need parking access on campus. An update will be proved regarding Spring Semester permits in advance to faculty/staff once a new date has been established for the annual permit renewal process and as additional information regarding the timing of reinstatement of payroll deductions is available.

If you have discarded your parking permit expiring June 30th, 2020 or are a new employee please contact the TPS Customer Care Center at tps@ohio.edu or 740-593-1917 to obtain a free temporary permit or with questions regarding your campus parking permit access. Contactless permit options are also available.

Students

Parking permits are available to Phase 1& 2 approved students that will be residing on campus or participating in face to face activities. Students seeking a parking permit should contact the TPS office directly to see what options are available to them. 

Parking permit sales for student commuter and residential permits for approved Phase 2 students will begin at 7:30AM on Wednesday, September 16, 2020. An e-mail will be provided to approved Phase 2 students at the time sharing additional transportation and parking support guidance. Students should contact Transportation & Parking Services Customer Care Center to arrange Phase 2 parking needs for fall semester. 

 
Hourly Parking Options

Hourly parking options are available throughout campus. Contactless payment is available by using the Parkmobile app. Outdoor payment kiosks are cleaned and sanitized daily and parking meters cleaned weekly. 

University Fueling Station

The OHIO fueling station is available to all Ohio University, Athens City, and Athen Public Transit vehicles. To help promote health and safety of users a hand sanitizer dispenser is mounted at the fuel pumps as well as routine daily cleaning of the pump handles and keypad.

Everyone is advised to follow proper hygiene. Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after filling up your vehicle or use 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
