In August 2015, Ohio University Culinary Services elevated the on-campus meals experience with the opening of The District on West Green. Following significant renovations, the venue’s unique, upscale and contemporary design captured the attention of Foodservice Equipment & Supplies, earning its 2017 Facility Design Project of the Year award.
The award was presented to Rich Neumann, director of Culinary Services, and Dennis Washington, general manager at The District, on May 20 during the Foodservice Equipment & Supplies’ annual Dealer of the Year and Industry Awards Gala in Chicago.
“This is a significant achievement as we were in competition with all food service segments including restaurants, hotels, casinos, business and industry as well as other colleges and universities. This is truly the best of the best,” said Neumann.
Contest judges cited the venue’s flexible stations, restaurant flow, micro-restaurant execution, use of sustainable materials and its emphasis on healthy foods as factors in their selection of The District renovation. They praised the OHIO Culinary Services team for creating a design that stimulates all five senses while encouraging the discovery of a variety of food choices.
Judges also acknowledged The District’s LEED Gold certification, which the facility received from the United States Green Building Council in February. The credit related to the “Optimization of Energy Performance for Equipment and Appliances” was one aspect of the LEED certification process that exceeded expectations—receiving four out of four points.
Being part of the Culinary Services team that designed this beautiful facility was a dream come true, reflected Washington. “As alumni return to visit, their number one word is ‘WOW’, and I agree!” he said.
