Ohio University is hosting its first Student Success Summit as a collaborative effort by the Division of Student Affairs, the Division of Diversity & Inclusion, the Center for Advising, Career & Experiential Learning, and University College. Any unit across Ohio University regardless of campus is invited to attend and/or submit.

What Is the Summit Designed to Do?
Everyone at Ohio University contributes to student success, whether that may be academic, personal or social success. The Ohio University Student Success Summit is focusing on how units foster student success through strategies, activities and ideas. This summit is intended to bring together people across the ecosystem of student success to increase knowledge and efficacy of campus programs and resources, collaboration opportunities, and problem solving. The day will highlight attention and work being offered by many units, introduce emerging concepts relevant to a broad range of professionals, and create opportunities to enhance inter-unit collaboration. We are all in the business of our student’s success.

Session Overview: The Global Mobility Committee has opened a call for proposals for study abroad/away programs that will run during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years. This session discusses was issues of domestic or global concern are relevant to current students and how we can connect to these issues through study abroad/away programming.

What employers want: 8 competencies for career readiness and success

Session Overview: A focus on sharing 8 desired career competencies gathered by NACE (National Association of Career & Employers) through a national assessment of employers. We will discuss ways that practitioners can help to develop these competencies among students. With a goal of collectively preparing our students for career readiness and lifelong career success, we will participate in practical ideas and activities that can be implemented and facilitated in varying capacities and interactions with students.
Where Two Roads Meet: Career Development and Diversity & Inclusion

Session Overview: This session will address the hard questions that LGBTQ+, students of color, and folks who want to start families often face when going to interviews. How do we help them prepare? What questions should they ask and answer? How do we help them be the most authentic form of themselves in a professional space they've not been to before? Let's talk about it.

Fostering Student Success through Hands-on History

Session Overview: This session will discuss examples of instruction, research, internship, and student employment through the Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections and Digital Initiatives. In these units of OHIO Libraries, students learn by doing. They engage with original primary source materials in a variety of formats and participate in experiential learning. Their efforts contribute to the organization, description, discoverability, and usage of materials across Mahn Center collections.
Beyond Aisle 9: Unveiling career opportunities at Kroger through innovative student engagement
Presenters: Holly Seckinger & Nancy Edwards-Grady
Session Overview: More than 70 percent of Ohio University students stay in the state after graduation. This is great news for the 24 Fortune500 companies that call Ohio home. However, many employers seem narrow focused to students- nursing majors think of Cleveland Clinic, retail merchandising majors think of Kroger. So how do we get students to think outside of the box when it comes to careers? Join us to discuss how we used a deconstructed career fair model with Kroger to help meet students where they are at

Session Overview: Acknowledging that AI presents challenges to higher education, this interactive session focuses on opportunities AI can offer to support student success. Participants will use free generative AI applications to discuss and discover ways students can use this technology to support their academic success appropriately and innovatively (test preparation, study skills, career exploration, etc.). How do you use AI in your work to support students, or have you been meaning to give AI a try?

Session Overview: This session explores the integration of the Brain-Based Career Development model into student supervision practices. By leveraging cognitive neuroscience principles, attendees will discover innovative strategies to enhance student motivation, decision-making, and goal attainment. Practical applications and case studies will showcase the model's effectiveness in supervision practices(goal setting, task prioritization, and developing action steps).
Exploring Ohio University Culinary Services: Pathways to Student Success

Session Overview: Ohio University Culinary Services is proud to be one of the largest self-operated college dining services in the nation. Our goal is to provide the finest quality food and service at reasonable costs to our students and guests. Our meal plans offer flexibility, exceptional value and convenience. The following session intends to summarize the various roles undertaken by student employees in Culinary Services, highlight the advantages of working within the department, and outline initiatives aimed.

Evidence based practices and learning theories implemented at the AAC to support student academic success
Presenters: Heather Harmon
Session Overview: Data shows the Academic Achievement Center has nearly doubled the number of students using our services since SP22. We are currently serving approximately 4000 students. The AAC utilizes data and learning theories such as Social Constructivism, Zone of Proximal Development, and Self-Determination Theory to best support student academic success. These theories are directly applied in our daily work, which fosters a sense of autonomy, competence, and belonging amongst our students.
Student Success Through Place-based Pedagogy

Session Overview: This session examines an interdisciplinary OHIO program that facilitates place-based pedagogy through service-learning projects with community partners. Learn about how the Alternative Spring Break program and others at OHIO utilize this high-impact practice to build students’ positive sense of place, connect to the region and university, create lasting friendships, and improve outcomes.

Enhancing Career Readiness: A new partnership between career readiness and the writing commons

Session Overview: This session highlights a collaboration between the ACE and the Writing Commons that integrates writing tutors into resume reviews. Students get resume best practices and writing support in one dedicated session. This pilot program shows an effective partnership and encourages attendees to explore collaborations to address diverse student needs at OHIO. Attendees will gain insights into the benefits of this collaboration and be inspired to initiate similar initiatives in their respective program

Session Overview: Students can often experience being bounced from one office to another while searching for answers. Feeling brushed off or redirected can lead to students feeling neglected or disregarded. Student-facing staff should be able to provide support while also being realistic about their limitations. The objective of this session is to create strategies for providing essential information to alleviate any anxieties related to connecting with new staff or transitioning between support systems.

Session Overview: Brainstorm with us how to increase participation in study away, a high impact practice, among students by strategically building the opportunity into academic plans and removing existing curricular barriers. Please join presenters as they share more about their role, how you can partner together and find options that may be a good fit for your students as they decide on the best fit for their personal, career, and academic goals.
Accessibility Abroad: The Basics and your role in supporting students

Session Overview: Please join the Office of Global Opportunities and WorldStrides’ Accessibility Team for a guided session on support of students with disabilities and accommodation requests related to international programs. This session is intended as an introduction on supporting students with disabilities as they explore study away options, and how students can work with Ohio University staff and program providers like WorldStrides (ISA & TEAN) to begin accommodation inquiries and requests. All are welcome!

Restoring Students Confidence: Rethinking Academic Probation
Presenters: Didi Chilcott & Kristin Distel
Session Overview: Hearing “You’ve been placed on academic probation” can shatter a student’s confidence and, we posit, ultimately hinder a student’s academic progress and performance. Our presentation suggests a shift toward encouraging, positive language: replacing “academic probation” with “academic restoration.” We will propose a more holistic approach to serving students who are experiencing academic difficulty and discuss ways that staff and administrators can collaborate to provide a network of support.

Academic Coaching and Bobcat Breakthroughs: Supporting Student success

Session Overview: How can we help students who’ve never learned to study? Where can students turn when they want an accountability buddy? Enter Academic Coaching! Academic Coaches provide support with avoiding procrastination, becoming motivated, and learning to study. Bobcat Breakthroughs is a program for students experiencing academic probation, wherein they meet weekly with an Academic Coach. This session includes exciting information about Bobcat Breakthroughs adding support for another student population!
