Culinary Services partnership ensures food access for OHIO community

Amid transitioning to an online campus, physical distancing and changes in off-campus employment, many in the OHIO community have turned to Cats’ Cupboard, the on-campus food pantry, for assistance in ensuring they are able to access proper nutrition during such an unsure time. Seeing a greater need for pantry resources, Ohio University’s Culinary Services began donating larger quantities of food during the spring semester.

“We’ve partnered with Culinary since the beginning of the pantry. They provide expertise on food handling, the pantry remodel, and food ordering,” said Assistant Dean of Students Kathy Fahl. “They use their purchasing power to allow us to buy food at very reduced rates.”

In addition to Culinary Services’ normal contributions, the food donations have been a huge help as the pantry is still seeing 20-40 people a week seeking resources. “Students are really worried about how they will feed themselves and, in some cases, their families during this crisis. We see a lot of relieved faces to receive several bags of food from the pantry,” said Fahl.

Culinary Services is donating staples such as cereal as well as perishables like yogurt and Lunchables. Fahl explains that these donations are a great supplement to the food the pantry is already able to supply.

“Currently, there is so much need in our county, we are unable to buy much product from the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, so the Culinary donations have been essential in keeping the pantry stocked,” said Fahl.

Due to the evolving situation surrounding COVID-19, the Cats’ Cupboard Food Pantry transitioned to a twice a week appointment-based drive-up option of prepackaged bags of food. Cats’ Cupboard is one of the Bobcats Helping Bobcats initiatives organized by the Office of the Dean of Students. Those interested in giving to the pantry can drop off donations outside of the Maggie Davis Room, near the GoBus Lane and Baker Student Center Parking lot on Tuesdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
