Missed Appointment Policy Notice
Please review this policy carefully, as it will ensure your successful completion of BASICS.
How long does it take to complete BASICS?
The BASICS program consists of two (2) individual counseling sessions. Session one consists of an hour with your BASICS Counselor, plus an additional 30 - 45 minutes completing assessment instruments. Consider the first session a two-hour appointment in your schedule that day.
Two weeks later, session two is a one-hour appointment with your BASICS Counselor, plus several minutes afterward completing a satisfaction survey and a post-test. To complete the program, you must attend both sessions within two weeks? time.
What if I miss an appointment due to illness or an emergency?
We hope you won't! But if so, you will need to provide specific documentation of the event. During registration, you will review and sign our Missed Appointment Policy form, which outlines a few circumstances in which it is acceptable to miss a BASICS appointment. BASICS Supervisors, not BASICS Counselors, will determine the acceptability of cancellations on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, due to high demand, you may have to repeat the program from the start, perhaps with a new counselor. In order to re-register for BASICS, please come in person to Counseling & Psychological Services, located in Hudson Health Center, on the 3rd Floor between 9:00AM and 4:00PM. Students referred from the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility, Athletics, or Residence Life must bring their referral form and student I.D.
What if I miss an appointment for reasons that are not approved?
Counseling and Psychological Services automatically charges $20 for No Shows to scheduled counseling appointments. This will show up on your account as a "miscellaneous medical charge." An additional $100 rescheduling fee will be charged to your account once you return to CPS and register for BASICS. You will need to clear the charge in order to register for classes the following semester. Again, because of demand, many students will have to repeat the program from the start, and may be assigned a new counselor.
What if I miss an appointment again, after rescheduling?
We will notify your referral source that you have failed to complete the program despite two attempts. If you are referred by the Ohio University Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility, you will be charged with violating your probation. The sanctions for this violation can include fines, probation extension, suspension, and expulsion.
If you are referred by the Athletics Department, an attorney, an officer of the court or another such party, we will notify them of your failure to complete the program. You will not be permitted to register for BASICS a third time, and may need to pursue alternative methods of fulfilling your legal obligation.
