February 01, 2017 : Campus volunteers welcome Southern Campus students
Campus volunteers provided snacks, assistance, games and a movie– all served accompanied by a smiling face – during Welcome Week as Ohio University kicked off spring semester classes Jan. 9.

Although the details may have changed over the years, Ohio University Southern (OUS) has been hosting welcome activities for new and returning students since the 1990s. This semester, an estimated 200 students participated in Ironton. The Proctorville Center also provided snacks and assistance throughout the week.

Director of the Human Services Technology program David Nelson was one of the volunteers greeting students last week. “I help as a faculty member to ensure that students are supported in finding their classes and other campus offices. I also enjoy getting to meet students that I may not have in my courses.”

Student Ambassador Bill Tussey assisted with the Welcome Week information tables and activities. Tussey believes that events such as these are important for campus culture – especially for OUS since it’s a commuter campus. “It is, for many students, their first time on a college campus. Having information tables helps to ease some of the awkwardness and intimidation they may feel those first few days of classes,” Tussey said.
