2019 Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade
May 28, 2019 : Ohio Southern Receives Past Grand Marshal Award in 151st Annual Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade
OU Southern Float - 2019 Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day ParadeOhio University Southern honored fallen veterans in the 151st Annual Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade on Monday. A group of faculty, staff, and students developed a parade float depicting a family mourning at the grave of a serviceman killed in action. Ohio Southern’s float embodied this year’s parade theme, “Tribute to Patriotism,” and was awarded the Past Marshal’s Award.

The poignant scene included Anna Payne, a 2019 graduate of Ohio University Southern, as the soldier’s widow. The daughters of faculty member Craig Harvey: Charley Harvey, age 7, and Kassy Harvey, age 12, portrayed the deceased serviceman’s children.

OU Southern 2019 Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day ParadeOhio Southern’s units comprised the 9th Division of the parade, named in honor of Sgt. First Class Louis W. Ward, who served in the U.S. Army from 1945 -1949. Ward spent much of his duty in Occupied Japan. During his assignment, Ward met and married Fumiko Tomita and later, the couple moved back to Ohio where they started their family, including daughter, Mikiko Crawford, Ph.D., who retired from Southern in 2018. Dr. Crawford and members of the Ward family rode in the parade in his honor.

Electronic Media students provided a live stream of the parade. A recording of the broadcast will be featured on Ohio Southern’s website and social media platforms. Other campus groups involved in this year’s parade included volunteers from Southern’s facilities, IT, Student Resource Commons, and Communications Departments.
