April 11, 2017 : Freshmen Excellence recipient grateful for opportunities at Southern Campus
A 2016 graduate of Green High School, Ohio University Southern freshman Travis Otworth can usually be found in the Riffe building. An Electronic Media major, Otworth is a recipient of the Freshman Excellence scholarship, awarded competitively awarded to incoming freshmen. Class standing, GPA, strength of curriculum and a minimum ACT score of 25 are all considered for this scholarship.
A second-generation student, he was aware of many about the educational opportunities at Ohio University Southern. “My mother graduated from the Southern Campus in the 1990’s, so I knew it was a good value for the tuition.”
Being close to home, with an emphasis on education and not distractions, was also important to Otworth. “I want the best education I can get, with as little debt as possible. My focus is on gaining knowledge and skills; not partying.”
The Freshmen Excellence scholarship has made it easier for Otworth to attend college, as well as maintain contact with friends and family, and he recommends the Southern Campus to anyone considering higher education. “I really like the atmosphere,” he said.

After graduation, Otworth would also like to contribute to the scholarship fund, “to give others the same opportunities I received, to help others get a good start on the education needed for their career.”
He offers these words for anyone considering college; “Stay determined with your plans, even if you are undecided, stay determined to go to school. Choose good people to help guide and inform you for your future.”
