                 Ohio University Southern’s Community Education Department is offering upcoming courses for persons interested in careers in the medical profession. The two courses will begin this fall and include Clinical Medical Assistant Program and Medical Administrative Assistant Program.
 
The Clinical Medical Assistant course is a 140-classroom hour program with a required clinical externship.  This course is intended for students who want to prepare for a challenging and rewarding career in healthcare.  Students will be trained to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle.

                Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare.
                The Clinical Medical Assistant program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands-on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider.  To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Health career Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. 
                Student tuition for the Clinical Medical Assistant program is $2,599 which includes textbooks.  Upon completion of the course curriculum, students will also perform a 160 hour Clinical Externship. This course will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting September 11, 2018 through December 20, 2018 and includes six full-day Saturday instructional sessions during the program.
               
                The Community Education program will also offer a 50-hour course in Medical Administrative Assistant program.  This course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. Medical Administrative Assistants, Medical Secretary, and Medical Records Clerks are all positions in great demand.
               
               This program covers important background information on the medical assisting profession and interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management and management of practice finances. Students in this course will receive a well-rounded introduction to medical administration designed to introduce them to the necessary skills required to obtain a medical administrative assistant position in the health care field. This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam.
               
              Student tuition for the Medical Administrative Assistant course is $1,199 which includes textbooks. This program will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning October 15, 2018 and concluding December 10, 2018.
 
              Students in these two courses will not earn Ohio University credit, will not have an Ohio University transcript, or earn an Ohio University certificate.
