2022 Spring Semester Events


All Club Meeting

The Spring Semester OHIO Southern Clubs and Organizations Meeting will give members a chance to discuss and evaluate goals and objectives, develop courses of action, keep members updated on current events, and provide opportunities for the group to communicate and promote club cohesion. Facilitators will allow the organizations to discuss resources together during the meeting for decision-making and to plan for future events and fundraisers.

Major Exploration

Are you undecided about your college major or career goal? Do you have questions about your major? In this workshop, you will learn how to navigate the career exploration process, enhance your self-awareness skills, and discover specific majors that align well with your interests, values, skills, and personality. At the end of the workshop, you will walk away with various tools and resources to help you make an informed decision.

MLK Donation Drive

In conjunction with our celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Ohio University Southern student organizations will host a donation drive to support the Bobcat Share Box and local food pantries. Donations can be made on campus and consist of non-perishable food items.

Featured Speaker: Dr. Bernard Lafeyette 

The Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette, one of the original Freedom Fighters, is an American civil rights activist, organizer, and a leader of the civil rights movement. He played a leading role in early organizing of the Selma Voting Rights Movement; was a member of the Nashville Student Movement; and worked closely throughout the 1960s movements with groups such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the American Friends Service Committee. Moderator for this event is the Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan Jr.

During this Campus Conversation, The Rt. Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer ("Bishop Mike") will share his experiences and lead us through his Seven Steps to End Racism. He currently serves as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia.

Meet the 2022 MLK Writing Contest Winners

Dr. Hayley Haugen, Professor, Arts & Sciences, and MLK Writing Contest Coordinator, will announce the Ohio University Southern Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest winners. Students were asked to write a poem on a contemporary social topic involving peace or protest that they felt would have gotten Dr. King's attention were he still alive today. During this presentation, students will share their work.

Key to Networking Success Workshop

This workshop will challenge participants to reflect on their personal leadership brand and discuss how to leverage their brand for professional networking. Participants will develop an elevator pitch and discuss how to utilize LinkedIn and informational interviews for networking success.

Reflections: Black History

Join us throughout February as members of our community share their perspectives on African American history and the black experience. Once Upon a Time: Fairy Tale Meanings, Morals, and Messages

Explore the enchanting and surprisingly dark themes of several well-known European fairy tales with Career Coach Eric Brown. What did the writers think? What were the personal and cultural issues that influenced these tales? What are they expecting readers to believe? You will find that the original stories' desired morals might not be quite as you first assumed when understanding fairy tales' historical background and analyzing the characters, styles, and plots.

Love Your Body: Health Fair

Love Your Body is a fun and educational week-long event during the month of February that encourages students to take a moment to reflect on the importance of their health – their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Each day of Love Your Body starts with a portion of the acronym, LOVE.

  • Learn (Monday, the 14th): We will learn about ways to improve our self-esteem, self- acceptance, body, and self- awareness. 
    • Join us for physical activity challenges with Titus Franz from Tri-State Rehab Services and Preferred Fitness, ping-pong, hula hoop contests, cornhole, and more in the Rotunda from 10:00am- 2:00pm. 
  • Ownership (Tuesday, the 15th): Resources will be available to teach us ways to take control of our mental, physical, and emotional health. 
    • Stop by our gratitude wall in front of the Bowman auditorium to take a moment to reflect on what you’re thankful for.
    • Reiki, or energy healing, sessions with Loretta Buckley will be available in the Caucus Room from 10:00am-2:00pm.  
  • Value (Wednesday, the 16th): We will celebrate our inherent value as human beings and the importance of healthy boundaries in relationships. 
    • Join us to meet different community organizations like CONTACT Rape Crisis Center for information on healthy relationships in the Rotunda from 10:00am-2:00pm.
    •  Make your pals a card to commemorate your friendship in the library all-day during Palentine’s Day!
  • Engage (Thursday, the 17th): We will engage in giving back to our local community and students.
    • Join us as we collect non-perishable food items in conjunction with the MLK Donation Drive for the Bobcat Share Box and local food pantries. Boxes can be found in front of the Advising Center in the Collins Building and Nursing office in the Academic Building.

Writer's Series: Eric Brown

Eric Brown (he/him/his) is the Career Coach for Regional Campuses representing the southern campus of Ohio University. He assists students by providing one-on-one career counseling, career engagement events, and career-oriented workshops. Eric completed a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 2021 from Southern New Hampshire University, where he specialized in speculative fiction. He lives in a rural Ohio town near the Ohio University Southern campus and writes short and long-form fiction. His work is featured in Daily Science Fiction; he also presented at the 2019, 2020, and 2021 Popular Culture Association National Conference on the works of Stephen King.

“Fannie Lou Hamer: Stand Up” Showing

Join us for a viewing of Fannie Lou Hamer: Stand Up. From PBS, “Civil rights legend Fannie Lou Hamer is remembered by those who worked side by side with her in the struggle for voting rights. An African-American sharecropper from the Mississippi Delta, Hamer’s difficulty registering to vote in 1962 led to her career as an outspoken activist, congressional candidate, and fierce fighter for the rights of all.” All rights are reserved to MPB.

Kindness Rocks

Drop by library to use your creative energy to paint a Kindness Rock. The messages on these positivity pebbles take many forms: gratitude, affirmations, encouragement, and offers of hope―all signposts along the way for someone to find at precisely the right time. Envision Access Conference

The conference is devoted to increasing awareness in addressing the needs of students with disabilities. Our goal is to create a positive space for developing community connections, understanding of best practices, embracing assistive technology, and fostering working relationships between secondary and post-secondary institutions and community organizations. Understanding Ethics and Values Workshop

Knowing how your values and ethics influence your actions is the key to self-awareness. By working in small groups and assessing personal values, participants delve into the gray areas of ethical leadership. Participants will learn the power of values in decision-making and the ethics that drive multidimensional communities through facilitated discussion and interactive group activities.

Celebrate Women 2022

Celebrating our 16th anniversary, Celebrate Women has devoted 16 years to providing community and business leaders, campus and community members, and students with the opportunity to learn, share ideas, and network with one another. The purpose of Celebrate Women is – through education, enlightenment, and inspiration—to encourage and enhance gender equity by honoring the past, present, and potential accomplishments of women from diverse ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds. This event is planned in conjunction with National Women's History Month. This year we are specifically celebrating Resilience & Rejuvenation on Friday, March 25, 2022, at Ohio University on the regional campuses.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Victoria Arlen shares her own story and how to confront any challenge life delivers. She speaks about the perspective we give to the obstacles in our lives, how to change them, and how to push off those roadblocks to achieve greater heights.

Creating the Beloved CommUNITY

This year's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration will center around an all-community reading. This program offers unique opportunities for self-reflection, interaction, and understanding of diverse perspectives. The all-community read engages participants to examine and better understand topics such as diversity, inclusion, and social justice through many perspectives. We invite students, faculty, and community members to join us as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King by taking a deeper dive into one of his most powerful works, "Letter from Birmingham Jail."  Refreshments will be served.

Poem In Your Pocket Day

I AM…Dr. Purba Das

This speaker series will feature Dr. Purba Das. Dr. Das was born and grew up in India. She came to America to study in 2000. After getting her M.Sc. from Purdue University, she worked in California for a year. She obtained her Ph.D. from Washington State University in 2008; she began teaching at Ohio University Southern. She will share her stories about the cultural differences, difficulties, similarities during her 13 years living in the Appalachian region.
