Computer Services  Department
Job purpose

To provide desktop support for computers, laptops, telephones, faxes, printers, and copiers. Additionally, will provide classroom and lab support for audio and visual devices such as projectors, amplifiers, AV switches, AV splitters, DVI, HDMI, RCA, RS-232, and VGA ports for classroom computer carts.

Duties and responsibilities

Office and work area desktop support, including:

  • Troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of common computer, telephone, and printer issues
  • Replacement of some components, such as printer toner, imaging drums, and various cables
  • Updating and replacing outdated versions of software to meet security requirements
  • Deploying task sequences and software packages or applications using imaging programs

Classroom and lab technical support, including:

  • Troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of common login issues for network accounts
  • Proper connection techniques for DVI, HDMI, RCA, RS-232, and VGA connections for instructor stations
  • Repair of audio and visual errors pertaining to AV switches and splitters
  • Troubleshooting and repairing Bluetooth synchronization issues with Eno boards and pens
  • On-demand installation and configuration of software applications when required by instructors

Additional Information Technology (IT) duties, including:

  • Configuration and deployment of task sequences and application packages using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
  • Modifying and maintaining various different inventory applications when moving or replacing equipment and consumables such as printer toner, imaging drums, xerographic units, fusers, and waste containers
  • Installation and configuration of various e-mail clients on different operating systems and software platforms for desktop computers, laptops, Android, and iOS devices
  • Demonstration of proper backup and restoration practices when dealing with electronic data in secure and encrypted environments
  • Using and understanding the necessary tasks involved in profile management, domain environments, user access privileges, and access assignment for local profiles
  • Custom configuration of several software applications to meet university standards, including but not limited to Compass ESL, Norton Ghost, SCCM Clients, Kurzweil, Read & Write Gold, MakerBot, PGP Desktop, SPSS, AutoDesk, Sophos, and Classroom Performance Systems (CPS


Some rudimentary knowledge in basic computer maintenance skills, operating systems, Juniper and CISCO networking, programming languages, and common software applications is essential for this position.

Essential skillset includes knowledge in:

  • Microsoft Operating Systems, including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and Server 2012 R2
  • Mac OS X, including 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11
  • Microsoft System Software Configuration Management task sequences, application packages, and deployment or a similar imaging application
  • Microsoft Active Directory and Administrative Tools, such as component services, computer management, group policy management, local security policy, and services
  • Local and network accounts, the characteristics of each of those types of accounts, and the management of access privileges for individual users as well as groups
  • Microsoft and Mac OS X driver installation and configuration for various devices, as well as demonstrated knowledge in conflicts with PCL5, PCL6, PS, and Open Print drivers

After extensive training on safety and university IT practices, student employees must demonstrate an adequate ability to solve problems, troubleshoot, perform basic maintenance, work safely with electricity and electrical components, and completely repair and/or reassemble an inoperative classroom setting.

Working conditions

Some special working conditions include:

  • Working outdoors, especially when dealing with the Ohio University Horse Park
  • Working in ceilings, basements, and other confined spaces that require safety precautions
  • Working with and around electrical components that require safety precautions
  • Working on ladders for extended periods of time while performing specific tasks

Physical requirements

Heavy lifting is frequently required of items weighing up to 80 lbs.

Facilities Management Department

Ohio University Southern Campus - Ironton

The Ohio University Southern Campus in Ironton is seeking a part-time student worker for the Facilities Management Department.  This 20-hour per week position involves miscellaneous physical activities associated with the maintenance of the physical surroundings at the Southern Campus.  Only Ohio University Southern students are eligible to apply.  Work hours will be scheduled around academic requirements and to meet the needs of the Department.  Some early morning, evening, or weekend work hours may be required.  State of Ohio minimum wage laws apply.

The desired candidate should possess a strong work ethic, be capable of receiving and following instruction, and be willing and able to participate in strenuous physical activity at times.  The ability to work outdoor during all weather conditions is required.   Common job related tasks as a part of the Facilities Management team includes assistance with or involvement in the following:

  • Site and grounds maintenance including snow removal activities

  • Landscape maintenance

  • Miscellaneous light construction or maintenance projects

  • Waste management / recycling programs

  • Surplus material moving

  • Special event set-up and tear down

  • Other maintenance activities as assigned by the Director
