Join Ohio University Southern for the first in a monthly series of virtual Campus Conversations addressing race from different perspectives from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Hosted by the Ohio University Southern Council on Diversity and Inclusion, Campus Conversations hopes to serve as a catalyst for change by bringing people together to learn, share experiences, ask questions and inspire collective action.
“Discussions on race are the hardest conversations to have,” said Robert Pleasant, Associate Director of Student Resource Commons. “People are afraid they’re going to say the wrong thing or ask an offensive question. But if we are to have real, meaningful change, it starts with dialogue. It starts with everyone sharing their truth and that truth being accepted.”
The first Campus Conversation, Being Black, will feature members of the Bobcat family who will share experiences, discuss racial inequities and explore what the community can do to effect positive, lasting change. Panelists include Alan Brown, Ohio University Southern Alumnus; Walt Mayo, Instructor, Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy; Dr. Teresa McKenzie, Coordinator of Accessibility and Veteran Services; and Dr. Salome Nnoromele, Associate Dean of Student and Academic Affairs.
This event is open to Ohio University Southern students, faculty, staff and alumni.
“Our goal with this initiative is to create a safe space where authentic conversations can take place,” Pleasant said. “Where attendees leave the session with a deeper understanding of someone else’s life experiences. No, we can’t change the world with a one-hour, once-a-month, conversation, but we can plant a few seeds that will grow into something amazing if we continue to nurture them.”
The event will be virtual and registration is required by visiting https://ohio.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9R0RToqJoVtxIFL
