The Electronic Media Department of Ohio University Southern presents the annual Student EMPixx Awards to recognize high school level video production and computer animation excellence.
 
This annual competition is open to all regional high schools that have a video/TV/computer animation production class and student individuals that are exploring these fields on their own.
The Ohio University Southern Student EMPixx Awards are open to all area high school students
The intent of the Student EMPixx Awards is to recognize excellence in the creation of video, audio, and multimedia projects. There is no charge for submission of materials, and no limit on the number of submissions from each school.

2017 Rules and Regulations
 
­
1. Awards will be given by Ohio University Southern’s Electronic Media Department to winners in recognition of high school level excellence in audio, video, and multimedia production in the following categories:
 
­
Animation ( Flash, stop action, or claymation. Time limit: 1 minute or less )
 
­
Audio Production ( Segments of music composition, news, radio documentaries, or sound design for video or web content. Time limit: 3 minutes )
 
­
Digital Photography ( Submit three photos – MUST be one each of a person, a place, and a thing. MUST be original photographs. Submit photographs in electronic format. Please do not submit printed photos )
 
­
Entertainment ( Comedy, horror, drama, or music videos. Time limit: 10 minutes or less )
 
­
Independent ( The Independent category MUST contain the following: Prop – Cowbell; Dialogue – “Just roll with it”; Character – Superhero )
­
Multimedia Print ( Poster, flyer, brochure, or CD/DVD cover.) MUST be submitted in hard copy printed­ format. Do not submit electronic versions for the Multimedia Print category )
 
­
Multimedia Web (Original website created by students may be entered into the multimedia web category. Themes suggested for students’ websites for the 2017 EMPixx should be related to community, education, history, environment, business, charities, health and wellness, sports and recreation, games, music, nature, animals, mathematics, science, art, family, and technology.­
Websites can be from a class assignment or an independent project.
 
Anything that would not be allowed on your school’s computer is not allowed in your submission for the EMPixx multimedia web category
 
Students must do the work. All work on the website should be done by an individual student or in groups of students. Websites that include work done by administrators and/or teachers cannot be entered. Websites should be submitted on CD or DVD )
 
­
News Cast ( Segments of school news, weather, sports, and announcements. Send only the best 10 minutes )
 
­
News Feature/Story ( Single feature or story for a news cast. Time limit: 3 minutes )
 
­
Radio Commercial ( Topic: Time. Time limit: 30 seconds )
 
­
Sports News Feature ( Single sports feature story. Time limit: 3 minutes )
 
­
Video Commercial ( Topic: Time. Time limit: 30 seconds )

2. Eligibility. The Student EMPixx Awards is open to all high school students.

­
3. The entry must be a not-for-profit, original, student production. If undue professional influence is evident or if the individual is found to have professional standing, the entry will be disqualified.

­
4. Video entries must be submitted on a DVD. Audio and Multimedia entries must be submitted on a Compact Disc. DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS – only copies will be accepted. Although every possible care will be taken with media in our possession, we cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage. Remember, image and sound quality of the entry is a factor in judging. ENTRIES WILL NOT BE RETURNED.

5. The entry MUST NOT consist of more than 25% stock footage, photography, or sampled material.

­
6. All entry forms must be completely filled out and signed by the class instructor or school official. A winning entry shall have the applicable prize awarded to the school listed on the entry form with certificates awarded to the production assistants listed on the entry form.

­
7. Final judging will be by select industry professionals associated with the university and the faculty and staff of the Electronic Media Department at Ohio University Southern. Video entries will be judged using a five-point scale in the areas of Writing, Camera Operation, Lighting Technique, Sound Quality, Talent, Editing Technique, and Concept of the project. Audio entries will be judged using a five-point scale in the areas of Writing, Mix, Levels, Editing, Talent, and Concept. Multimedia entries will be judged using a five-point scale in the areas of Writing, Design, Graphics, Navigation, Media (audio, video, photographs), Content, and Concept of the project. The production with the highest total score in its entered category wins.

­
8. To be considered, the entry and completed entry form must be postmarked by March 13, 2017

­
9. Label the DVD or CD prominently with category, entry title, school, and student(s) name using the submission label provided.

­
10. Submission of an entry gives Ohio University Southern permission to show the work at the awards ceremony and include it in any promotional materials related to the competition or campus. A written notice declining this agreement may be sent along with the entry and will be honored.

­
11. Winners must achieve a minimum average of 3.0 on the score sheet to be qualified as a winner in a category. A winner may not be selected in each category.

 
2017 EMPixx Scholarship Information
 
Undergraduate attending Ohio University Southern majoring in Electronic Media. Full time. Non-renewable. Must be graduating high school senior for scholarship consideration.
