ATHENS, Ohio (Oct. 30, 2018)—Representatives from AT&T visited the Schoonover Center for Communication on the main campus of Ohio University in Athens on Wednesday, Oct. 25, to show the company’s continuing support for Scripps College of Communication’s innovation initiatives.

AT&T partnered with the college for the 2018 Scripps Innovation Challenge and contributed $1,000 toward the prize. The company also provided the competition challenge: participants were asked to find ways to improve Appalachian high school college readiness and graduation rates.

“We are grateful for the support from AT&T, which enables us to provide experiential learning for our students, through which they are able to hone their problem-solving and presentation skills,” said Scripps College of Communication Dean Scott Titsworth. “Our corporate partners are vital in helping us prepare the next generation of communication professionals.”

BJ Smith, director of external affairs for AT&T Ohio, served as a judge for the challenge. Smith and Sarah Briggs, vice president for external affairs, delivered the check.

Andrew Alexander, executive-in-residence, and Jean Marie Cackowski-Campbell, executive coordinator of the Innovation Challenge, met with the AT&T representatives.

“It’s so exciting when students explore a real-world problem, and then come up with a feasible and fresh idea for its solution. Over the course of the competitions, I’ve been amazed at how inventive some of the solutions have been,” said Jean Marie Cackowski-Campbell, the Challenge’s executive coordinator.

The Scripps Innovation Challenge began in 2013 as a competition open to students from across campus, encouraging teams to develop and pitch innovative solutions to real-world media and communication challenges. Challenge topics are presented by organizations across the industry and organizations interested in how media and communications can advance social good.
