Drew McDaniel named permanent Media Arts and Studies director

ATHENS, Ohio (May 8, 2014)—Dr. Drew McDaniel, who has served as interim director of the School of Media Arts and Studies at Ohio University this past academic year, was named to the permanent post earlier this spring.

“The School of Media Arts and Studies will benefit greatly from Drew’s extensive experience as an administrator and faculty member at Ohio University,” said Scripps College of Communication Dean Scott Titsworth. “His leadership style is such that he will be very approachable, and he will also be a very strong advocate for the students and faculty in MDIA.”

McDaniel was named director of the school following a national search. He had served in the role of interim director since July 2013. As interim director, McDaniel led the school through a busy and productive year. Among its many new initiatives are administering the College’s new social media certificate, gaining approval for a Semester in LA program that will begin this fall and conducting the first High School Media Workshop, slated for July 9-12.

Previously he had served two terms as school director and has also served as director of Communication and Development Studies, director of Southeast Asian Studies, and director of the Center for International Studies.

Titsworth said McDaniel’s extensive experience at Ohio University will aid him in directing a school with a growing reputation for programming excellence.

“Drew is passionate about the future of MDIA, and that passion will be apparent as he engages faculty and students in dialogue about the future of that program,” he said. “I am excited to have Drew on the academic leadership team in the College—few people can combine the same mix of academic credentials, commitment to innovation, and reverence for students as does Drew.”

The School of Media Arts and Studies is located on the third floor of the new Steven L. Schoonover Center for Communication. It is home to more than 650 undergraduates and more than 20 faculty. To learn more, visit
