A politician with a voice that resonates on the left

ATHENS, Ohio (Sept. 22, 2017)—The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism will host a “90 Minutes Series” candid conversation with Nina Turner, a former Ohio senator and Bernie backer, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 in Schoonover 145. The talk is free and open to the public.

Nina Turner, a Democrat, has been a fiery voice in Cleveland politics for a while now, and her name keeps popping up as a future candidate for Ohio governor. Whether Turner runs or not isn’t as important in a non-election year as what she sees on the political front in the era of President Donald Trump.

She was a prominent supporter of Bernie Sanders, which speaks to the issues Turner finds important. But she is more than a follower of other political figures; Turner has her own political agenda, which differs from the politics of those on the right. She has a lot to say, and what she says is worth listening to, even if you disagree.

Most of the “90 Minutes” conversations this fall will focus on some aspect of excellence in journalism or public policy. Diversity and inclusion, however, will be at the heart of most of these programs.

An Education Beyond the Classrooms
In an effort to bring issues that matter to campus, the “90 Minutes” series is building partnerships across the university community and will bring diverse speakers to Athens, Ohio.

OU Association of Black Journalists, Housing and Residence Life, Office of Student Affairs, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Scripps College Diversity Committee, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, The LGBT Center, Honors Tutorial College, Center for Law, Justice and Culture, Office of the Provost and the Political Science Department are pitching in to make these events happen. The aim of the series is to create discussions on politics, racism, sexism and global topics. These events will expose Ohio University students -- all students on campus -- to men and women who have faced adversity or who have seen bigotry and discrimination happen for others but have stepped forward to address those social and cultural wrongs.

No one is expected to take what any speaker says as gospel, but we are hopeful that everybody who attends one of these events will come away with a more enlightened view.

The “90 Minutes” series is sponsored by: Housing & Residence Life, Office of Student Affairs, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Honors Tutorial College, Center for Law, Justice and Culture, Political Science Department, The Resident’s Action Council, and Associated Press Sports Editors.
