Student website wins national journalism award

ATHENS, Ohio (June 7, 2017)—Ohio University’s independent student news website The New Political received a Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence national award.

The New Political was named winner as Best Independent Online Student Publication and named a finalist as Best Digital-Only Student Publication, SPJ announced the last week of May.

“Staff at The New Political are known for their passion for reporting about all things politics at the local, state and national levels,” said Nerissa Young, faculty adviser to the OHIO SPJ chapter who also submitted the work for the awards. “No one should be surprised that their passion manifests itself in excellence.”

The awards honor the best in student journalism in newspapers, magazines, art/graphics, radio, television and online.

Judges were directed to choose only those entries they felt were outstanding work worthy of a national honor, according to an SPJ news release. If the judges determined that none of the entries rose to the level of excellence, no award was given. School divisions are based on student enrollment, which includes both graduate and undergraduate enrollment. Schools with more than 10,000 students are designated as large schools. OHIO competes in the large school category.

Winners and finalists were previously recognized by receiving first-place awards in one of the SPJ’s 12 regional competitions. Ohio University competes in Region 4, which includes Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. Each first-place regional winner advanced to the national competition.

Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry, works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists, and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.

The New Political website is currently under construction until late August. Visit The New Political on Facebook and Twitter.
