ATHENS, Ohio (Sept. 13, 2018)—The Scripps College of Communication welcomed the Ohio University community back for its fourth annual Cookout with the Dean to kick off the 2018-19 academic year. Attendees joined Dean Scott Titsworth, along with other faculty and staff, for a patio cookout on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Schoonover Center.

Titsworth said the event is a great way to welcome back students and set the energy for the rest of the year.

“I think that one of the hallmarks of our college is that we operate as a very tight network of people,” Titsworth said. “Through the day-to-day of the academic year, you don’t get chances to really celebrate that.”

There were approximately 300 attendees at the cookout, and they were able to enjoy hot dogs, sides and refreshments while getting the chance to reconnect with students, faculty and staff.

Daniel Cobb, an engineering student, said he stopped by because he had a communication class that day and appreciated being able to interact with other colleges and departments. He said his favorite part about the cookout was getting to meet new people.

“Being an engineer, it’s important to have the ideas, but also to communicate them,” Cobb said.

Titsworth said he also had the opportunity to meet some guests who were not part of OHIO’s community and they said they had never seen anything like the cookout on a college campus before.

“It was really interesting hearing the perspective of people that aren’t associated with even Ohio University that said, ‘This is really a cool, genuine thing that you do,’ and I think that says something about us as a college and us as a university,” Titsworth said.

He added that this event is not just about the personal connection among students and faculty, but for students getting a chance to sit and talk with each other over food.

“I think things like that are what makes Ohio University really special and our college really special,” Titsworth said.
