ATHENS, Ohio (Oct. 5, 2017)—OnlineU has ranked Ohio University Scripps College of Communication’s online bachelor’s degree completion program in applied communication first in its “2018 Most Affordable Online Colleges for Public Relations Degrees” rankings.

According to the website, the rankings list 13 colleges and universities that offer the most affordable online bachelor’s degrees in public relations, all with annual tuitions under $17,000. All institutions considered for this ranking offer fully online degrees at the bachelor’s level or higher. Ohio University’s degree came in with the lowest annual tuition cost, at $7,290.

“Our hope with this degree is that through its delivery and its cost structure, this program meets the needs of students who are in communication-intensive work environments,” said Scott Titsworth, dean of the Scripps College of Communication. “In short, we wanted a degree program that met students’ needs in multiple ways while maintaining the high-quality instruction that is experienced by students in our residential programs. This award suggests that we are meeting our objectives. We are definitely proud of the program that we offer and are excited to continue opening pathways for students who seek to further their education and training in the communication field.”

Ohio University's bachelor of science in communication in the applied communication major is an online degree completion program designed for associate degree graduates who want to further their education and advance their careers. The program focuses on the study of multiple communication fields including visual, written and oral communication. Students take a variety of courses in journalism, media production, web and print design, communication studies, and telecommunication systems. Students can receive credit for previous associate degree study and can earn a bachelor’s degree in as few as two years.

“One of the hallmarks of our program is its flexibility,” said Brittany Peterson, coordinator of e-learning development, Scripps College of Communication. “Students can select courses that are meaningful to their unique career path, making the degree their own. For instance, some students aspire to specialize in media production or visual design, whereas others aim to enhance their communication and analytic skills to equip them for management positions. Seniors in the program put this knowledge into action by conducting research in their workplaces and offering deliverables back to their companies.”

The online major launched in fall of 2014, and has received some notable awards and national attention. In 2016, Nonprofit Colleges Online listed the Ohio University applied communication degree program as first in its “2015-16 Best Online Bachelor’s in Communication and Public Relations: Students Before Profits Award.” The OHIO program landed the number one ranking out of 50 other communication programs nationwide. Last year, OnlineU ranked the online program in applied communication eighth in its “2017 Most Affordable Online Colleges for Communications Degree” rankings.

Regarding the criteria for rankings, OnlineU said that “Tuitions were manually researched and reflect the degree level requirement tuition if offered, or the next level tuition cost. Out-of-state tuitions were used unless in-state tuition is offered to all online students. Program data including available degrees, tuition rates, and details about program coursework were collected from official school websites, reflecting data for the 2016-2017 school year. This data was collected in September of 2016.”
