Second annual Scripps Innovation Challenge Pitch Day takes place April 21

Student teams involving students from four colleges to compete for $25,000 in prizes

ATHENS, Ohio (April 16, 2014)—The second Scripps Innovation Challenge at Ohio University will conclude Monday, April 21 with Pitch Day, when seven teams of finalists will present their innovative solutions to challenges posed by the media industry.

Four judges representing a variety of media professions will award $25,000 in prizes. The event will take place from 2 to 5:30 p.m. in Baker Center Ballroom B and is free and open to the public.

The Scripps Innovation Challenge, sponsored by the Scripps College of Communication, is an annual competition open to all students on campus, regardless of their major. The contest is funded in part by money earmarked for innovation within a $15 million gift from the Scripps Howard Foundation. The first prize will be $10,000. Additional prizes will be $5,000 for second place and $1,000 for each of five honorable mention entries. In addition, this year’s contest features a $5,000 prize for diversity enhancement, which can be won by any of the seven finalist teams whose solution best reaches underserved and underrepresented audiences.

This year’s contest attracted a record 31 entries from 27 teams. On March 26, the seven teams were named as finalists. They represent students from majors across the university, including mechanical engineering, meteorology, information and telecommunication services, journalism, finance and marketing, strategic communications, and visual communications among others.

“It has been exciting to see the growth of the contest and wide response to the Scripps Innovation Challenge this year,” said Scripps College of Communication Dean Scott Titsworth. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the quality of the presentations on Monday and excited to present the prizes to these deserving students. The contest is indicative of the College’s commitment to fostering media innovation and provides an outlet for students to use their skills and abilities to solve problems currently being faced by organizations throughout the industry.”

Students competed to come up with solutions to any of seven “challenges” submitted by media industry professionals. They included how to better alert residents to weather-related closings and cancellations, to how news organizations can monetize their growing audiences of Twitter followers.
