Scripps College of Communication students recognized at annual Leadership Awards Gala

Scripps College of Communication students recognized at annual Leadership Awards Gala

ATHENS, Ohio (April 27, 2018)—On April 18, Ohio University’s Division of Student Affairs held its 35th Annual Leadership Awards Gala, which recognized outstanding student, faculty and staff leaders from across the University. Among those recognized were 13 Scripps College of Communication students.

Charles J Ping International Leadership Award
International Student and Faculty Services created this award in 2010 to recognize outstanding leadership by an international student enrolled in Ohio University.

  • Meihan Zhang – School of Communication Studies

Women’s Issues Leadership Award
This award recognizes a student or student organization that has shown outstanding leadership and/or community involvement on women’s and gender issues, or has raised consciousness about those issues.

  • Madison Sloat – School of Communication Studies

Blackburn Spencer Scholarship Award
The Blackburn/Spencer Scholarship and Achievement Awards were established by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board in 1979 in honor of Martha Jane Hunley Blackburn, the first African American woman to graduate from Ohio University and Donald A. Spencer, the first African American to serve as chairman of the Ohio University Board of Trustees. Recipients are selected based on a combination of financial need, academic performance, and outstanding contributions to Ohio University.

  • Juwuan Tye – School of Media Arts & Studies

Latino Heritage Achievement Award
The Latino Heritage Achievement Awards were established to recognize outstanding students of Latino descent.

  • Jonathan Camargo – E.W. Scripps School of Journalism

Francine Childs Diversity Leadership Award
This award represents the most prestigious diversity honor bestowed upon an OHIO student. Recipients will be individuals who promote the principles of social justice, leadership, cultural diversity and service to the campus and/or region.

  • Imani Evans – School of Communication Studies

Eyes of Freedom Scholarship Award
The Eyes of Freedom Scholarships were created in 2015 by the Combat Veterans Club to honor the memory of the twenty-three United States Marines and the Navy Corpsman serving in Columbus, Ohio’s Lima Company, 3/25 Marines who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.

  • Michael Martin – J.W. McClure School of Information and Telecommunication Systems

Edwin L. Kennedy Community Service Award
Named in honor of Alumnus Edwin L. Kennedy, this award serves to recognize an organization or an individual for their lasting and selfless acts of leader as servant to one’s community.

  • Samantha Miller – E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and School of Media Arts & Studies

Division of Student Affairs Academic Excellence Scholarship
Established through generous gifts to the Division of Student Affairs Support Fund, student employee scholarships are meant to recognize the important role that students play in the work of the Division of Student Affairs at Ohio University.

  • Faye Sloma – School of Communication Studies

Division of Student Affairs Excellence in the Workplace Scholarship
Established through generous gifts to the Division of Student Affairs Support Fund, student employee scholarships are meant to recognize the important role that students play in the work of the Division of Student Affairs at Ohio University.

  • Corey Cale – School of Visual Communication

Outstanding Senior Leader Award
The Outstanding Senior Leader Awards will be presented to up to eight Ohio University seniors for outstanding leadership during their collegiate careers.

  • Hannah Britton – E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
  • Sara Defibaugh – E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
  • Samantha Miller – E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and School of Media Arts & Studies
