VisCom’s Alie Skowronski and Nate Swanson are two of the six finalists in the 2020-2021 Hearst Journalism Awards Program National Championships. Skowronski recently graduated and Swanson will be a senior next fall. Both are photojournalism majors.

OHIO is the only school with two students in the championship. OHIO News featured Swanson’s and Skowronski’s work in January after an earlier round of the Hearst competition.

The 2021 cohort of Hearst photo finalists is made up of the two top winners from the News/Features and Picture Story/Series Competitions plus four finalists selected from a semi-final round. A total of 211 entries were received in the two photojournalism competitions held this academic year.

The National Championships will be held June 5- 14, during which the finalists will fulfill spots assignments for additional scholarship awards ranging from $1,500 to $10,000. National Championships will also be held in the categories of writing, audio, television and multimedia. The 2021 Championships will once again be held as a virtual event.

The 61st annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication and fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The program awards up to $700,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
