Graduate Admissions & Financial Aid
Graduate admission is only for fall semester of each academic year. International Applicants must submit materials by December 31 and Domestic Applicants must submit materials by January 31 for full consideration. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Late applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis until program openings are full. See the Ohio University Graduate College page for general requirements and information.

Submission Procedure
1. An application for graduate study at Ohio University must be submitted online.
2. The following must also be submitted by all applicants:
- Original/official transcripts of previous academic work
- Statement of Intent
- Curriculum vita or resume
- Three letters of recommendation
3. You may also be required to submit additional documentation. Examples include:
- U.S. students must submit a score on either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller's Analogies Test (MAT)
- International students who are not native English speakers must also submit TOEFL or IELTS scores
- Financial documentation
Application Screenings
Applications will be initially screened by the School of Media Arts and Studies' graduate director to determine if the minimum requirements for admission to the program have been met. All students should have achieved a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for previous degrees. U.S. students are required to submit scores for the GRE or MAT. International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores unless they are native speakers of English. Our minimum TOEFL score is 100 iBT (or 600 paper). Students taking the IELTS must achieve a minimum score of 7 across all bands. See English Proficiency for additional information on English proficiency testing.
The final screening is done by the graduate committee which ranks qualified candidates based on academic record, professional experience, and recommendations.
Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Assistantships are competitively awarded based on academic record, professional experience, recommendations and current needs of the School of Media Arts and Studies. All GAs are required to work 15 hours in exchange for a stipend and full tuition waiver and may be assigned as teaching assistants, research assistants, or instructors. Stipend levels are reviewed annually; for the 2020-21 academic year, doctoral students received $15,000 and master's students received $12,000.
