2019 VisCom Alumna Emma Kramer: Social Media in Denver

2019 VisCom Alumna Emma Kramer: Social Media in Denver

Major: Information Design: Publication in the School of Visual Communication (VisCom)

Plans after graduation: I will be the Social Media and Content Coordinator for the Colorado Rapids in Denver, CO.

What clubs and organizations were you involved in? I was in the University Program Council until I accepted an internship with the Columbus Blue Jackets during my senior year.

Did you have any jobs on campus? I was a College Ambassador in Schoonover Center. I was also a Learning Community Leader for two years.

Did you complete any internships? What were they? Where? I had four different internships with four different sports organizations during my time at Ohio University. After my freshman year I interned with the Lake Erie Crushers in Avon, OH. I was their Graphic Design and Marketing and Promotions intern. Following my sophomore year I freelanced for the Amherst Steele High School hockey team in Amherst, OH. as their Graphic Designer and Social Media Coordinator. I helped them get their name out into the community after the team disbanded for 4 years. During my junior year I started interning with Columbus Crew SC, the Major League Soccer team in Columbus, OH. I was their Digital and Social Media intern, which is where I truly found my love for the digital department in sports. During my senior year I began my Marketing internship with the Columbus Blue Jackets, also in Columbus, OH. My second semester junior year and my entire senior year I would commute to and from Athens up to Columbus to complete my internships while also taking classes.

Briefly describe the aspects of your Scripps experience that you think most helped you land your job: I think that Scripps gives the students a lot of freedom to explore every opportunity out there. Without flexible class schedules and the professors willingness to learn where a students interest lies it wouldn't have been possible for me to accept internships an hour and a half away from OU. Karen Peters, the Internship Coordinator is a huge asset to the college as well. She worked with me to help me get in contact with professionals in the sports industry and helped me utilize LinkedIn even more than I already was. Overall, students, professors and faculty are all willing to help someone land their dream job or internship. Every person I have encountered at Scripps and Ohio University have made a lasting impact on my time here and have attributed to my success. I am extremely thankful for the Scripps College of Communication and the dedicated people that help the students find their own success.

How do you feel about graduating? Although I am sad to be leaving Athens and Ohio University I am beyond excited to be starting my next adventure in Denver. OU has been preparing me for this new and exciting challenge for the past four years and I can't wait to get started with the Rapids.

In June, a whole new class of Ohio University students will be coming to campus for Bobcat Student Orientation. If you could tell them one thing, what would it be? Take advantage of every single opportunity that is available to you. You will never truly learn what you want to do without taking different classes, accepting as many internships as possible and embracing all the knowledge that is at the palm of your hand.
