EDUCATION: Ph.D., communication, Michigan State University, 1966; M.S., agricultural journalism, University of Wisconsin, 1958; B.S., agricultural journalism, Michigan State University, 1957.

EXPERIENCE: Joined the faculty in 1966; graduate coordinator in the School of Journalism, 1972-80, 1986. Assistant extension editor, Michigan Cooperative Extension Service, 1959-63. Has received numerous research grants: O.U. Research Committee, 1978-79, 1970-71; American Newspaper Publishers Association, 1974-76; Ohio Osteopathic Association, 1981-83; O.U. Baker Fund, 1984-85, 1979-81. Served on the six-member oversight board of the PRSA Body of Knowledge project, 1985-1992. Served on an educators’ advisory board, Foundation for Public Relations Research and Education, 1992-94. Was co-winner of the outstanding graduate faculty award at O.U., 1976; received the 1985 Pathfinder Award for outstanding research in public relations from the Public Relations Society of America; was PRSA Educator of the Year in 1990. Named Outstanding Honors Tutorial Tutor at Ohio University, 1994. Has been on the editorial board of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly since 1976; editorial advisory board, Public Relations Review, since 1982; editorial advisory board, Public Relations Research and Education, 1983-89; editorial advisory board, Public Relations Research Annual, 1989-97; and editorial advisory board, Newspaper Research Journal, since 1990. In 1983, the O.U. chapter of PRSSA was named the Hugh M. Culbertson Chapter. Co-author of Research Methods in Mass Communication (Prentice-Hall, 1981 and 1990) and The Media in the 1984 and 1988 Presidential Campaigns (Greenwood Press, 1991). Co-editor and co-author of International Public Relations: A Comparative Analysis (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, in press). Author of chapters in four textbooks; “Three Perspectives on American Journalism,” Journalism Monographs, 1983; Cloaked Attribution: What Does It Mean to News Readers (American Newspaper Publishers Association, 1975); Veiled News Sources--Who and What Are They? (American Newspaper Publishers Association, 1976); co-author of Fundamentals of News Reporting (Kendall-Hunt, 1971, 1973, 1977, 1983, 1990, 1994); co-author of The Social, Political and Economic Contexts of Public Relations: Theory and Cases (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1993); co-author of The Practice of Political Communication (Prentice-Hall, 1993). Co-editor and co-author of International Public Relations: A Comparative Analysis (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1996). Author of numerous articles in public relations and mass communication journals. Member: AEJMC, PRSA, and International Communication Association Board of Directors. Has lectured about public relations and mass communication in Mainland China, the Philippines, South Korea, Germany and Thailand.
