Konneker Medal Design Competition: Call for Entries
Ohio University seeks submissions from students and alumni for a competition that will select a design for the Konneker Medal for Commercialization and Entrepreneurship. The winning design will receive $2,000 in prize money.
The Ohio University Foundation established the new award to recognize current and former faculty members or students who have demonstrated excellence in innovation, invention, commercialization and entrepreneurship. Up to three awards will be given each fall.
The award is named for Wilfred Konneker, an Ohio University alumnus with a distinguished record in research and entrepreneurship. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1943 and his master's degree in physics and astronomy in 1947. He received a doctoral degree in nuclear physics from Washington University in 1950.
Konneker founded the Nuclear Consultants Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri, and either founded or co-founded six additional high-tech start-up companies.
The alumnus was instrumental in the establishment of Ohio University's small business incubator, the Innovation Center, as well as the university biotechnology spin-off company Diagnostic Hybrids, Inc. He is one of the principle architects of the Cutler Scholars program. The research laboratories housing the Edison Biotechnology Institute at the Ridges were named in his honor to recognize his leadership and service. The Konneker Alumni Center also was named for the alumnus and his wife, Ann Lee. Konneker is a member of the Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees.
The medal design competition is open to all Ohio University students and alumni in all disciplines. The applicant with the winning design will receive $2,000 in prize money. The design will be submitted to a company that will manufacture the die-struck medals.
Submissions for the medal design competition must address the following criteria:
1. The medal will be 2.5 inches in diameter and round in shape.
2. The design should be one-sided, with the name of the award and the recipient to be engraved on the back.
3. Images of Wilfred Konneker can be viewed on this page. The image is not a requirement for the design, however.
4. Applicants must submit a 2-D drawing or a photograph of a 3-D model as a PDF file.
Applicants must include the following information with the submission:
2. If student, major and class rank
3. If alumnus, degree and year
4. Contact address, phone and email
Applicants must submit a PDF file of the design (no larger than 5 MB) by 5 p.m., Friday, June 1 to Andrea Gibson at email@example.com. Individuals are welcome to submit more than one design.
Submissions to the design competition initially will be evaluated by a faculty committee. The Ohio University Foundation Board will select the winning design during its July 2012 meeting. The design award recipient will be notified by Aug. 1, 2012.
