OHIO filmmakers garner major awards for features

Oct. 14, 2011

Two Ohio University School of Film faculty members, Annie Howell and Rajko Grlic, received major awards for their feature films in October.

Assistant Professor Howell and co-director Lisa Robinson won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the Hamptons International Film Festival (Oct. 13-17) for their film Small, Beautifully Moving Parts.
A scene from Small, Beautifully Moving Parts was shot at the Grand Canyon.

The festival partners with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to give an annual cash prize to a film that features a realistic and compelling portrayal of science and technology. Previous recipients have included the films Kinsey and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, according to Howell.

Small, Beautifully Moving Parts is about a pregnant tech geek who takes a road trip to reconnect with her estranged mother. The film debuted at the prestigious SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. This fall, the feature has screened at the Port Townsend Film Festival, Mill Valley Film Festival and New Orleans Film Festival, and will appear at the Siren Nation Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, and the Starz Denver Film Festival in November.

Eminent Scholar Grlic's tale of middle-aged infidelity Just Between Us took the international prize at the 2011 Raindance Film Festival, which ran Sept. 28-Oct. 9 in London. Raindance is considered to be Europe’s leading independent film festival.
Just Between Us has received numerous acting, directing and best film awards.

In Just Between Us, the first feature Grlic has filmed in his native Croatia in 20 years, the intertwined love affairs of two brothers with their wives and mistresses reveal a passionate undercurrent in the lives of middle-class Croatians. The film has garnered numerous international film awards since its debut in March 2010. Last summer, Grlic received the City of Zagreb Award for directing, and the film picked up the "Silver Dolphin" Special Jury Prize at 27th edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Setubal, Portugal. Other honors include the Best Film and Best Actor prizes at the GSIFF New York 2010 International Film Festival, and eight awards at Croatia’s Pula Film Festival.
