Outstanding Lecturer recipients are noted as awarded. If an award recipient is not identified or selected, that year will not be included in the listing. The Regional Higher Education Outstanding Lecturer was first awarded in 2015.


Regional Campus Outstanding Lecturer Award

The Regional Campus Outstanding Lecturer Award honors faculty at regional campuses who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and have an outstanding record of service to the campus and university, as demonstrated over the last three years.

The Award Selection Committee, designated by the Executive Dean of Regional Higher Education in consultation with the campus deans, is composed of five regional campus Group II faculty members, with one from each campus. Preference is given to previous Regional Campus Outstanding Lecturer Award recipients; committee composition may also be dependent on assuring representation across various disciplines. Each member on the committee will serve a three-year term. The three-year term will be staggered so that no more than two new committee members are added each year. A minimum of three complete nominations must be received for an award to be made. The Committee may recommend up to two faculty members for the award annually if five complete nominations are received (one from each campus). However, the committee may choose not to recommend anyone if no nominees meet the award standards.

The recipient of the award carries the designation Outstanding Lecturer, Regional Campuses, for two years and receives an honorarium of $2,000 annually for each of those two years. The awardees are not eligible for nomination for the award again for three years after the previous selection.

Nomination, Criteria, and Timelines

Nominations for the Regional Campus Outstanding Lecturer Award are generated at each of the regional campuses. Each campus may make one nomination per year. Nominees must be a Group II faculty member (0.80 – 1.0 FTE) who has served at the nominating campus for a minimum of three years. In reviewing nominees, the committee will consider evidence of the following:

  • Excellence in teaching effectiveness as acknowledged by peers and students coupled with self-evaluation
  • Design and implementation of innovative approaches to teaching including the use of technology across the RHE system and development of new courses or programs especially modification of courses to incorporate current classroom technologies
  • Interdisciplinary teaching including outside the individual’s primary area, including University College classes
  • Academic Advising and/or supervision of independent study, laboratory, field work, student activities and programs related to an individual’s academic discipline
  • Incorporation of active learning approaches, such as service learning, internships, and collaborative group projects into course work
  • Leadership in campus, university, and professional organizations
  • Civic and community activities directly germane to the educational objectives
  • Consistent record of staying current in professional development/continuing education activities including attendance and/or presenting at discipline specific conferences and the RHE annual conference

While the Faculty Handbook clearly states that there is no expectation for research or creative activity for Group II faculty, the Group II Outstanding Lecturer Committee will consider research and creative activity as evidence of professional development. 

The optional criteria for outstanding Scholarly Activity could include:

  • Publications
  • Supported research projects and grants
  • Papers/presentations
  • Other professional accomplishments
  • Creative or performance activities related to one’s disciplin
  • Ongoing research including works in progress and submissions under review

Each regional campus will conduct a nomination and selection process resulting in the name of one nominee per campus sent by the campus Dean to the RHE Selection Committee by March 1 of each year.

Nominees who wish to be considered for the Award by the RHE Selection Committee must

submit a current detailed curriculum vitae and a one-page rationale for nomination highlighting outstanding accomplishments over the past three years in both teaching and service. The summary of activities must not exceed a maximum length of fifteen pages and must observe standard margins of one inch with one and a half line spacing. All materials for the campus nominated candidate, along with a Letter of Recommendation from the Campus Nominating Committee and a Letter of Recommendation from the Academic Division Coordinator must be sent by the campus Dean and received by Office of Regional Higher Education (attention: Chris Gabriel) not later than March 1 of each year. The Selection Committee will meet in mid-Spring Semester and awards will be announced before late Spring Semester and will be presented at an appropriate occasion.
