Regional Higher Education COIL
What is COIL?
The SUNY Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) movement http://coil.suny.edu/ is a new teaching and learning paradigm that aims to develop intercultural competence across shared multicultural online learning environments. COIL brings students and teachers in culturally and geographically distant locations together through technology.
Why should I COIL?
Global competence and working with teams across distances through technology are vital twenty-first century skills. Particularly at regional campuses, students may not have opportunities to develop such skills except in the classroom. Connecting with classrooms in other cultural settings enhances teaching and learning and inspires students to engage with the world.
What is the OU RHE COIL Project?
OU Zanesville piloted COIL spring 2016 with the course HIST 3640: Europe Between the Wars, which connects students across four RHE campuses and Salzburg, Austria through OULN, WebEx and Blackboard. RHE Deans and OU’s Senior International Management Team (SIMT) supported the pilot effort and the initial five 2015-2016 RHE COIL Fellows who are in the process of “COILing” their courses. RHE has received a Konneker grant to support the initiative for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. Learn more here https://www.ohio.edu/regional/coil/.
How can I engage?
Send an email with a one-page description of your anticipated COIL project to Becky Simons (email@example.com) by August 29, 2016. See CFP for details. 2016-2017 COIL Fellow selections will be made by the second week of September 2016.
