New Advent Bound Water

New Adventures is Ohio University’s adventure orientation program for first year students! Develop leadership skills, see amazing places, and form lasting friendships – all before you even set foot on campus for your first year of college. Our New Adventures trips take place in the summer before your first semester.

Coming to college can be a daunting experience filled with excitement, uncertainty, and new challenges. That’s why taking advantage of the New Adventures tradition is one of the best ways to prepare. When you finally arrive on campus for your first semester, you’ll have confidence, strong friendships, and a new love for your school.

New Adventures offers 3 destinations to choose from:

  • Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Paddling Expedition in Minnesota:

During the seven day adventure in the Boundary Waters, participants will travel by canoe, portage canoes between lakes, and camp at isolated, beautiful campsites. Late summer sunsets will highlight evening meals, evening reflection meetings, and discussions of wilderness skills, and campus life at OU. Participants will travel in groups of nine while canoeing, with seven peers and two Ohio University trip leaders. All participants can earn 3 college credit hours while on this trip.

  • Backpacking in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area of West Virginia:

The Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia has all of the sights and challenge of the Rockies but is just four hours' drive from Ohio University. We'll spend our first day on campus at the Outdoor Pursuits ropes course followed by an evening clinic on backcountry camping and a chance to test your moves on the indoor climbing wall. The next four days we'll spend in the mountains of Dolly Sods trekking on paths used by settlers to take us past secluded forest groves, boulder filled rivers, and jaw dropping views of the Appalachian mountain landscape. At the end of each day you'll take charge of setting up your own campsite and making meals, followed by fireside talks about the experiences of the day while you soak in the night sky. Our final day will wrap up with a stop at the Ohio University zip line for a thrilling ending to an adventure packed week.

  • Rock Climbing at Kentucky’s Red River Gorge:

The Red River Gorge is a unique and scenic natural area within the Daniel Boone Natural Forest of
Kentucky. The Gorge is well known for its abundant natural stone arches, unusual rock formations,
and spectacular sandstone cliffs. After an afternoon on our own high ropes course, we will head to
the “Red” to explore the area from the spectacular views you will have as you enjoy four days of rock
climbing on some of the hundreds of routes at the Gorge, and on numerous day hikes during the week.
Prior climbing experience is helpful but not necessary – we’ll provide basic and more advanced
instruction as needed. Every day will end at camp where we will enjoy back country meals and a
well-earned campfire to rest by.  Camping will take place at Natural Bridges State Park.

"After participating in the New Adventures program through Outdoor Pursuits, I can't imagine having started my college career any differently. I am now a junior and it has set the tone for my entire experience at OU so far. It gave me the clarity I needed to see what I was really going to OU to achieve and shaped my success by giving me the confidence to follow my dreams. This trip also provided me with an excellent support system seeing as the people I met are still some of my best friends today. It is a laid-back, yet informative experience and I would recommend it to everyone starting college for the first time. I can honestly say it very positively changed my life and I'd love to answer any questions about my experience or the program!"

"I was a part of the New Adventures trip, right before school started. I loved the people I met, my leaders. Without a doubt they made my transition from out of state, and as a first semester freshman easier. I don't think it would have gone nearly as smoothly without them." - Emerson Milam
