Taught by Ohio University D-II Head Coach Philip Oberlin, the Learn To Play Hockey program aims to teach the fundamentals of skating and hockey while creating an environment that cultivates fun and learning. During the instructional session time, students will be taught how to control their edges, skate forwards and backwards, pass and shoot a puck, and more. During the "game time," students will be able to use their newly-acquired skills in a half-ice hockey game which will be monitored by coaches and staff.
Bird Arena will be providing equipment and rental skates at no cost to those participants who do not have their own. Equipment and skates are to be returned at the end of the session.
Each 6 week session includes:
6 Instructional Ice Sessions
Free Try Hockey Session
2 Mini-Game Jamboree Sessions
All sessions have ended for the year. The Learn to Play Hockey Program will resume next year.

Private lessons are perfect for those who want to advance their skating skills. Private lessons take place during freestyle times with a coach that best fits the skater's needs. Skaters must pay the private lesson rate on top of the rate for freestyle ice time.
All of our instructors are certified with the United States Figure Skating Association, have First Aid & CPR certifications, and are experienced skaters that are excited to coach.
To arrange private lessons, please email the freestyle/private lessons supervisor at FreestyleSkate@ohio.edu with the name of the skater, age, skill level, what your skater is looking for in a coach, the duration of the desired lesson, and your availability.
Freestyle sessions allow skaters extra practice time to fine-tune their skills. Skaters can work independently on various skills or receive a private lesson. For more informaton, email
