September 30, 2016 : OUS participates in Third Annual Conference on Diversity and Inclusion at ACTC
Ashland Technical and Community College (ACTC) hosted faculty, staff and students from numerous Tri-State colleges and universities Sept. 9 for the Third Annual Conference on Diversity and Inclusion. This year’s event focused on, “Appalachian Crossroads: Conversations on Diversity” and featured sessions focused on such topics as Appalachian influences, supporting African-American males and foster care students, disability through the lens of diversity and other issues.

Keynote speaker Terri B. Jamison, a domestic relations judge, recounted her early days as a student in both segregated and unsegregated schools in Welch, West Virginia. Jamison shared her journey from McDowell County to the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas in Columbus, Ohio.

Jamison spoke of the work yet to be done to bring diversity to the judicial system. “We all have a job to do,” Jamison said. “We need to be resilient. There are no fingers being pointed, but we can all do better.”

Ohio University Southern (OUS) participants included students and faculty from various disciplines and staff members. Ashley Lemaster, a freshmen Health Science Technology student, was impressed by the sessions and enjoyed learning from participants from the other schools. “I attended a session where we were asked to write poetry about diversity and inclusion.” Lemaster said. “I was surprised that no matter what culture, race or background we represented, all of our poems had elements that were the same.”
