November 12, 2015 : Jarrett recognized at inaugural Ohio Faculty Newsmakers Gala
Members of the Ohio University community took a break from the hustle and bustle of fall semester to honor their colleagues on Sept. 29 at the University Communications and Marketing’s inaugural Ohio Faculty Newsmakers Gala. The gala, held in Baker Center in Athens, recognized 122 faculty members who were most frequently featured in the media for their work.
Charles Jarrett, associate professor of sociology at Ohio University Southern and Ohio University Proctorville Center, was one of only 12 regional campus faculty and the only faculty member from OUS recognized at the gala.  In 2014, Jarrett was featured approximately 30 times, primarily about his research on the Gullah/Geechee culture of coastal South Carolina and Georgia.
The gala signifies the importance of media coverage for faculty and recognizes it as a way to highlight the important research and the university’s contribution to our communities.
Jarrett said, “We are in an era of marketing and promoting a university profile. The profile of OUS and Ohio University must be visible if we want people in this community to view us in an active, engaged and positive light.” Jarrett continued, “Coverage increases our credibility with both traditional and non-traditional students and potential students.”
Jarrett was also impressed by the gala itself. “[I was] amazed at the scope of it all. So many of the research agendas were very worthwhile and extremely valuable. I was pleasantly surprised that Ohio University faculty are involved in such important issues worldwide.”
