Aslanides Participates in University's Community Family Day

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (May 13, 2004) -- State Representative Jim Aslanides is scheduled to participate as a special guest reader at Ohio University - Zanesville's Community Family Day, a Jumpstart event to promote family literacy in the community.

Community Family Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 in Room 430 at the Zanesville Campus Center. Activities include a visit with Creek's Petting Zoo, various Make-It-Take-It activities, and face painting.

Singer-songwriter Debbie Clement, an Arts Enrichment Specialist personally committed to the significance of the arts in early childhood, will perform two children's concerts and Professional Storyteller Linda Hatfield will be on hand to entertain the children. And of course, door prizes and refreshments will be available through out the day.

Jumpstart Site Manager Colleen Romito said, "We sent invitations to all child care centers and elementary schools in Muskingum County because we didn't want anyone to miss out."

Families will have an opportunity to discover programs available through local community agencies participating in the event including Girl Scouts, Job & Family Services, Head Start, and the Lifestyle and Fitness Center from Genesis.

Financial support for Community Family Day has been provided by the Community Youth Foundational Corporation for National and Community Service, Head Start, and the Zane Trace Association for the Education of Young Children. Additional support has been provided by McDonald's, Domino's, American Greetings, Wal-Mart, Atwood State Farm Insurance, and American Eagle Outfitters, a national sponsor of the Jumpstart program.

The Jumpstart program combines the energy of young people and the resources of colleges and universities in a one-to-one tutoring program for preschoolers, contributing towards the day when every child enters school prepared to succeed.

Only the third school in Ohio to apply for the campus-based affiliate program, OU - Zanesville's involvement in Jumpstart expands academic learning through hands-on community service while also providing financial assistance for college students who serve as part-time AmeriCorps members.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information on Community Family Day, contact Romito at (740) 588-1555 or at romitoc@ohio.edu. Information on the Jumpstart program is available on the web at www.jstart.org/zanesville/.
