University music instructor receives honors

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- This academic year is turning out to be an extraordinary one for one local music composer and Ohio University Zanesville Campus adjunct instructor.

Charles SavageAn original piece by Charles Savage was selected for performance at a recent conference for the Society of Composers in Arkansas. Just as he was preparing to attend the conference and performance, he also learned that he received a Distinguished Alumni award from his alma mater, Ohio Valley College.

Savage's work "Mad Rush to the End" brings to mind the phrase "hurry up and wait," and was chosen from 180 pieces submitted for the Society of Composers Region VI Conference at Arkansas State University last month. Savage wrote the piece at the request of two musicians, one who plays tenor saxophone and one who plays clarinet, who desired to work together but found few opportunities to do so.

The Society of Composers, Inc. is a professional society dedicated to the promotion of composition, performance, understanding, and dissemination of new and contemporary music. Members include composers and performers both in and outside of academia interested in addressing concerns for national and regional support of compositional activities.

Savage holds two master's degrees from Ohio University, one in Composition and Theory and one in Music Education. He received his bachelor's degree from Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and earned a certificate of credit from Ohio Valley College (OVC), located between Parkersburg and Vienna, W.Va.

OVC presented him with a Medal of Merit in Arts alumni award for his significant accomplishments and his dedication ay in representing the college. Each year during the homecoming celebration, OVC honors outstanding alumni at the Alumni Awards Banquet in February.

Savage, a resident of Zanesville, has taught at Ohio University-Zanesville since 1998. He has given private lessons for over ten years, concentrating in voice trumpet and theory. He directs the Choral Union on campus and maintains involvement with professional and community organizations.
